It's been a week since we moved back to Bristol, Rhode Island from Manhattan. I've spent most of the time that we've been here catching up on books that I've been wanting to read and exploring town, seeing all the new architectural buildings they've built.
I haven't seen Harry since he dropped by the house a week ago to give me my book list, but I've been meaning to talk to him about some of the books he wrote on my list.
Harrison and I went to lunch yesterday, as friends, so he can catch me up on what I've missed in town the past year. The only difference between then and now, are the new buildings and a few new people in town, other than that almost everything is exactly the same.
Sean came over earlier today to hang out with Brandon. I debated whether I should ask him if he took my book, but decided against it, not wanting to make any accusations that I have no proof for.
So far, Bristol hasn't been as bad as I dreaded it would be, but it's only just the beginning.
"Melanie, when do you start school again?" My mother asks me as I help her wash dinner's dishes.
"Monday, why?"
"I'm just wondering how you're going to get to school every day. Your dad and I will both be leaving before you do," she says.
"I shrug my shoulders, I guess I'm just going to have to walk."
"Do you know how far that is? That'll take you thirty minutes at least." She hands me the last plate on the table, which I rinse and set in the dish washer.
"Yeah?"
"Well it's not summer anymore Melanie, its autumn. It's going to start getting colder and colder, and it's going to be dark in the morning. It's not safe to walk all the way to the campus."
I sigh and dry my hands on a clean towel. "Then I'll ride a bike. It's not a big deal, I'll find a way."
She tosses the dish rag onto the counter and places her hands on each of my cheeks, grabbing my face. "Stay safe, please." Then she kisses me on the forehead and walks to the couch where my dad is watching T.V.
"I'm going out exploring again, I'll be home later," I tell them as I finish up wiping off the counters.
"Haven't you already done enough exploring? It's a small town, what more could there be?" My dad asks, while he keeps his eyes glued on the television.
"I want to explore every inch of this town, I'm just really curious," I say.
"Okay, but don't be out too late. Be home a decent time."
"Will do, mother."
I grab my book bag by the bottom of the stairs and slip on my shoes before walking out the front door. The air seems to get colder and colder within each day and the sun sets at an early time now.
It's not dark yet though. There's a sliver of sunshine lurking around the horizon, slowly setting. A slight breeze blows through my hair, creating more knots, so I grab a ponytail from my wrist and tie my hair up out of my face.
It takes about thirty minutes to get into town square, and once I do, the sun has completely disappeared and the street lights are beginning to turn on.
The town's theme plays throughout the square as it does during sunrise and sunset. I don't know why we have a theme, but it's kind of nice and unique. I like the sound of it.
