"Myles!"
Myles ducked into corner, hoping his brother would pass him by. No such luck.
"Ha. Hilarious. I'm dying of laughter over here." snapped Beckett.
Myles bit his lip. "What are you talking about, Beck?"
"Oh, shut up. You can't play dumb, you never could. Therefore, you knew the answers you were giving me were wrong." Beckett waved a paper in front of Myles' face. "Every single one of them, wrong."
"Don't you think you're maybe over-react--"
"DON'T TELL ME I'M OVER-REACTING!" yelled Beckett. The students nearby stopped to listen in on the conversation.
"It's a sheet of math problems! We're not even in the same class!" said Myles, protesting only half-heartedly. "If you'd just thought it through..."
Beckett scowled. "Just because you're smarter than me, you don't need to rub it in my face by pulling this sort of trick." he walked off, leaving Myles standing there.
Myles mentally smacked himself. Beckett was taking it personally, like his intelligence was being insulted. Myles ran down the hallway to catch his brother. "Beckett, I didn't mean..."
Beckett ignored his brother, and after a few minutes, Myles gave up. He'd come around.
Eventually.
The bell rang through the hallways, dismissing school for the day. While the rest of the school exited by any means possible, Myles headed back to history to endure a detention. The teacher wasn't present when he got there, but another student was. Her head was on her desk, looking like she might fall asleep at any moment, which wouldn't have been unexpected in this class. Her brown hair was pulled back into a ponytail, and when Myles came in, she sat straight up before realizing he wasn't a teacher.
"Oh," she said, relaxing a little. "Sorry, I thought you were Mr. Sades." she yawned. "So what are you here for?"
Myles took a seat in an empty desk, facing the girl. "Not paying attention in class."
She laughed, revealing braces on her teeth. "No one pays attention in this class. You must've offended him, the not paying attention would just be the reason he could legit land you here. What'd you actually do?"
Myles considered this. "Upon inturuption, I questioned his sanity and teaching style, and may have possibly suggested that a drunken gorilla could teach better than him." he said.
The girl laughed. "Oh, his face must've been priceless. I would've paid to see that."
Myles smiled too. "i think my brother got a photo, on his phone..." his smile faltered as he thought of Beckett. He hastily changed the subject. "Why were you given the detention?"
"Just a couple of pranks. A tack on his chair, rigging a falling water bucket over the door. How he figured out it was me, I'll never know." she paused. "Sorry, I'm Kara. Kara Daniels."
"Myles Fowl." before he could continue, Mr. Sades walked in. Both of them faced forwards, and it wasn't noticed for a minute that someone was behind the teacher.
The boy following the teacher was small, but when Myles caught a glimpse of his face, it wasn't that of a child. The boy would look to be Myles' own age, except for his height. Myles was instantly on alert. He had never seen this student before, and he'd seen most of the school population.
Alright, he'd never seen Kara before, but she cleared five feet.
"Today you will be writing lines." said Mr. Sades, passing out sheets of paper. Fill out the page, double sided, with 'I will not disturb class'." Myles instantly thought of a loophole, and judging by Kara's smirk, she'd thought of it too. "Linden, sit down." he pointed the short boy to a chair beside Myles.
When Linden passed, Myles decided to take action. He switched to quiet, whispered, gnomish. "I know what you are, fairy."
There was a moments pause, then Linden gave him a weird look before jumping to get onto the chair. "Ummm... okay? Me no speak... whatever." he grabbed a pencil and began to write.
Mr. Sades left, thinking that the detention would keep them busy for awhile. The room was silent for around two minutes before Kara put down pencil and said, "Done." she grinned.
Myles put his pencil down moments later. "I do believe he's proving my theory right."
"What?" Linden leaned over to look at Myles' page. His own printing was large, but still relatively normal sized. Myles and Kara had written theirs huge, one sentence per side of the paper. "That works too." commented Linden, filling up his own page. He was out of there like a shot, and Myles was close behind. He was sure this boy was a fairy, no matter what he said otherwise.
"Myles!" Kara called him, trying to keep up. Ignore it, Myles told himself, follow Linden.
"Myles!" Kara said, "Slow down."
Grudgingly, Myles stopped to wait for Kara. "Do you walk home this way too?" asked Kara, once she had caught up. Myles shook his head.
"That way." he pointed.
"You're going the wrong direction then."
Myles gave one last look at where Linden disappeared, the turned back to Kara. "Yes. I had better be heading home now." He set off towards his house.
"Okay!" said Kara cheerily. "See you at school tomorrow!" she waved at him before disappearing around a corner.
On his way home, Myles reviewed all he knew about fairies. It wasn't enough to know what Linden was doing at his public school. He would have to go to the fairies themselves, or the equivalent.
"Artemis, I hope you know as much as you claim to." he muttered, picking up his pace.
