Chapter 2
We compare schedules as soon as we’re out of the office. Junichi traces over the tiny black print on our papers. “I guess we’re in different homerooms,” he observes with a sigh. “Well, I should go now. I’ll see you later, Yukio-sama!”
I nod as he strolls to his class. Then, I walk toward my own homeroom, taking cursory glances at the large doors that surely led into larger rooms.
A chill dances along my spine. I don't welcome a stranger or his gaze, much less two when they're approaching me from behind. I quickly spin around, raising my hands instinctively in a defensive stance. The redheaded students instantly freeze. Both stand with their own hands inches from my shoulders. I take note of their appearances with a little dread.
Identical twins.
“What a bore,” one complains, dropping his hands. He scowls and folds his arms behind his head as he slouches against the wall.
With a smile, the one on the right runs a hand through his hair. “Who are you?" he drawls, his grin growing larger. "You’re new here, aren’t you?”
Both boys simultaneously tilt their heads to the left as they study me. I scrutinize them as well, recognizing them from the past Ouran yearbooks as the Hitachin twins.
The boy on the left nods confidently. “We’ve never seen you before, so you have to be new. You’re a foreigner, right?”
I open my bag and pull out my notebook. ‘What were you trying to do?’ I scrawl quickly. They both take a minute to read my note.
“We were trying to scare you,” says the right one, raising an eyebrow at me.
“And why write?” the one on the left breaks in. “Can’t you just say it?”
I shake my head and jot down, ‘I’m Yukio. What are your names?’
“I’m Kaoru Hitachin,” he says, sticking his hand out.
The other leans to one side as he smirks. “Hikaru Hitachin,” he says haughtily. Then he gestures to the door in front of us. “Are you in this class?”
“If you do, we have the same homeroom!” Kaoru grins, wrapping an arm over Hikaru’s shoulders.
As I smile politely, my heart drops a little. How funny karma can be. Identical twins aren’t even that common yet here they are, in my own class. There is no escape, not even in Japan.
The teacher looks up from his podium while the two pull me into the classroom. “Oh, the Hitachins are here. And you must be Fukuyama-san?”
I nod quietly as the two push me into a chair and sit on either side of me. The teacher checks something in his book and begins to write on the whiteboard. Meanwhile, Kaoru and Hikaru chatter incessantly to each other.
Letting the sound of their voices fade from my mind, I sigh and lean back on my chair. After class, I should go look into the clubs once more. Father would want me to make as many connections as possible to any affluent family…
“Good morning, Hikaru-kun, Kaoru-kun!” Two girls stand in front of us, clasping their hands together over their yellow dresses. They tilt their heads as they examine me curiously. “And who is this?”
“This is Yukio, the new guy,” Hikaru says, leaning against me. "We're just going to show him around the school, since the Chairman asked us to."
