Nikolai.

It wasn't a good day today. But Nikolai already knew that, because it was impossible to have a good day on a school day. Wyatt had been buggy all day due to the return of his essay, apparently a B wasn't enough to please his self esteem. Roya had met up with her disgusting boyfriend, Andre, and returned to them for lunch, tired and annoyed. Her purple hair was tied back into a messy bun to keep away from her extra eye. It had freaked out Nikolai at first. Roya had yellow skin, like a desert snake, and three eyes with big yellow pupils and dark purple where the white should be. He had never minded her skin, it wasn't unusual to have brightly colored skin where he was from, but he had never seen anyone with eyes like hers.

"How is Andre doing?" asked Wyatt, not bothering looking up from his pile of homework.

"Eh, he is fine." Roya sat down with a shrug. She never seemed interested in her boyfriend around them. Nikolai didn't bother asking her. He'd known from the beginning that something was off with Roya and Andre's relationship.

Andre was tall, good looking and popular. Adrian O'Connor, Andre Delvy and Sofia Rya Blanco were considered the big three on the school grounds. They went through girlfriends quicker than almost anyone, and they were all three beautiful charismatic creatures.

But for almost three months now, Andre had settled for a nobody; Roya. It wasn't because she was weird or ugly, she just stayed out of everyone's way, like Nikolai. And yet, that wasn't what confused Nikolai. He had expected them to become attached, kissing in the hallways and rummaging at parties like all the other couples. But they only ever kissed in front of Andre's friends, and even those small smooches were cautious and awkward.

After two weeks of trying to solve the mystery that was their relationship, Nikolai had given completely up. Not because it was hard, it was just not interesting. Roya took a bite of her sandwich. To Nikolai's dismay, Roya turned towards him.

"So, what about you, Nikolai? You still sleeping at the center?" She asked with polite curiosity. Nikolai tried to keep himself from rolling his eyes at her. He lived in the ocean, where he was born and partly raised. As one of the only mermen at the school, Nikolai had received a lot of different remarks. Most of his people could change between tail and legs at will, the problem was that almost no mermaids learned how to walk on their legs. Like humans, they had to be taught as a child, if they were to have success as an adult. But due to him living underwater, he wasn't able to bring his laptop, book or papers home. The town had a center, where the few mermaids and mermen could stay for free when they were on land. Roya hated that he went there, and not to Wyatt or her's home, but she also knew she couldn't do anything about it.

"Yes" He answered while poking at his dull salad. It was a short answer, he knew it and he didn't care. Roya looked into his eyes for any sign of emotion behind it.

"You know, what if the three of us had a sleepover some time?" she asked, looking to Wyatt for support.

"What about Andre, won't he be mad if you slept with two boys?" I asked, looking at her coldly. It was a fowl move to go after her, especially since she didn't do anything wrong. She leaned back and sighed.

"No he wont, he knows that you two are just friends" It was a resort she had used before.

"We could invite him too, you know. The more the merrier" His tone was sarcastic and cold when Nikolai bit back. Wyatt had finally begun looking up from his homework at his two friends arguing. Roya didn't notice Wyatt's small figure, or she just chose to ignore him.

"Urgh, who are you even? You hate that guy, why would you wanna invite him?" she said it out aloud before realizing who she was talking about. Wyatt let out a shocked gasp and stared at her, but Nikolai couldn't help but smile slightly.

"Why don't you at least try to get me to like him? He is your boyfriend after all, right?" Nikolai might be enjoying himself too much with this, but at least it was better than actual school work. But before Roya could even bit back with something defensive, she was saved by Nikolai's favorite person. Nora, in her colorful dress and high heels had chosen this moment to take a place at their table. She usually only came to talk to Nikolai, so Roya and Wyatt instinctively reached for their trays to flee from the popular girl.

"Aw, it's okay, you two can listen, too!" Nora chirped excitedly, and wrapped an arm around Nikolai. He had to keep his eyes from rolling to the back of his head. Nora was his cousin, and they'd been close since childhood. She was the only reason Nikolai had learned to walk, and he was the only reason she'd wanted to stay at her adoptive family.

"What do you want today, Nora?" He asked her.

"Well, I am throwing a party later today, and it'd be totally cool if you and your friends would come! Oh, please say yes!" She hugged me while jumping in her seat. I looked over at Roya and Wyatt. I'd properly end up going, but I would maybe enjoy it a little if they went too.

"Do you wanna come?" I asked them.

"Sure" Wyatt replied nervously, Nora always made him nervous.

"Who else is gonna be there?" Roya asked Nora carefully.

"I think most of the juniors and seniors, Andre is coming if that's what you are looking for" Nora made eyes to Roya, who didn't look at all faced.

"Wonderful! I'll go talk to him later"

"I'll come too, if I can crash at your place after the party?" I nudged to my apple, not bothering looking up at Nora or Roya.

"Of cause, we have loads of spare rooms, Nik." Nora said.

"Well, when is it then?" Roya asked.

"Ten, and feel free to bring booze, you can never go wrong with booze!" Nora got up and kissed Roya's cheek as a goodbye. She left to find some other students to invite, and I returned to my salad. I could feel Roya staring at me the whole time, but I chose to ignore her. If she wanted to speak, she could speak. They finished, but before they got at chance to leave the table, Andre's lot came up to them. Nikolai sent them all three displeasing looks, which Sofia was happy to return. Sofia might be an elf, but there was nothing kind or generous about her. She hold herself up with graceful stubbornness, and had a sharper tongue than most of her people.

Andre sat down beside her girlfriend, and give her a casual kiss on her cheek. Neither of them looked happy by the gesture, but Roya tried to act like it was the audience's fault.

"We are in public, Andre"

"Sorry babe, couldn't help it" Andre's eyes didn't follow the small smile on his lips.

"Are you coming to Nora Nill's party?" asked Roya after giving me a warning look.

"Yes, I was going to ask you the same." Andre said. I began packing up my lunch, wondering when Roya would wake up and break up with the bastard.

"I am leaving, come or not" I said as I left. I could hear Wyatt follow, but Roya stayed.
