I freeze. Of course, this is just my luck. Ethan just raises an eyebrow at me while he finished chewing his sandwich. Once he swallows he speaks, slowly like he’s confused,

“What’s up?”

I just look at him like are you serious? I can’t tell if he’s going to chew my head off or laugh at me about this. It probably looks like I’m a 16-year-old me sneaking a boy into the house past curfew. There’s only one thing I can really do, I guess I introduce them to each other but how do I introduce Colson? Is he a friend? Is he an ex? Is he just this guy went to rehab with? I don’t know where we stand but it seems Colson is all over the situation and introduces himself to the man who seems to have completely abandoned his sandwich.

“What’s up man, I’m Colson, an old friend of Tay’s.” he reaches out to shake hands and Ethan takes his hand shaking it while squinting his eyes, I guess in an intimidating way, at least trying to be.

“I’m Ethan, her brother.”

“That’s cool I didn’t know Tay had a brother.”

Ethan looks at me with his oh really?  face and I know I have to get out of this room with Colson before the endless interrogation starts. I quickly grab his elbow and start dragging him towards my room.

“Well, see you later Ethan!” I say hurriedly, dragging Colson to my room and shutting the door.

I lean my back against the door, letting out a sigh of relief. I hear Colson let out a snorting chuckle while he looks around my room.

“What’s so funny superstar?”

“You.” He states, never taking his eyes off the pictures on my dresser.

I’m sure he can feel my eyes on him, silently asking him to elaborate. Though if he does, he doesn’t acknowledge it. He’s now moved to the stacks of books on my nightstand and around my floor, waiting to be put back on the bookshelf in the main room. He says something, but it’s so low I can’t hear it.

“What was that?” I ask, sitting next to him on my bed.

“You still read,” he says a little louder, turning his head to make eye contact.

“Of course I do. Why would I stop?” I question furrowing my brows in confusion.

“I don’t know, just thought you to have less time to I guess.”

“Well, there’s always the time when I'm not working.”

“I’m sorry, am I cutting into that time?” he asks, a smirk appearing on his face.

“Only slightly,” I say sarcastically, causing him to chuckle which in turn makes me smile.

But that smile fades quickly, reality creeping its way back into my mind. Why is he here? Is he taking a vacation or is he here permanently? And why does he want to see me and I guess talk? To clear his conscience? To see if he can get a quick fuck?

“Why are you here Colson?”

“What do you mean?” he asks, avoiding eye contact.

“You know what I mean. Why are you here, in my apartment, spending time with me, a girl you haven’t seen or spoken to in 5 years?”

He was quiet for a moment, deep in thought. Eventually, he sighed, breaking the silence in the room.

“Seeing you today...I don’t know it did something to me. I had this rush of emotions that I haven’t felt in a long time. Emotions I shouldn’t be feeling. I have a good thing going with Ashley and I don’t want to fuck it up. But you’re here in front of me and all I want is to kiss you like I did on that bench 5 years ago.” He finishes, finally looking me in the eyes as he says the last sentence.
