Robert paced nervously in front of Jekyll's office door. this had become routine for about a month now and while Henry had his moments of falling off of the face of the planet this had gone on for far too long.
Lanyon thought about the last time he'd seen Jekyll, it had been late one night and he just caught sight of him in the hall, he seemed to be exhausted and stressed when he entered his office so Robert let him be. He wondered now if that was a mistake.
in the span of this month Lanyon also had the pleasure, if one could call it that, to finally meet the one and only Mr.Hyde. the introduction had been icy at best, hyde frowning at Robert's hand when he held it out for a handshake then hissed at him after he introduced himself.
as Lanyon continued to pace Edward stormed down the hall carrying an umbrella and a bottle. Robert chased him down and eventually stopped him,
"Mr.Hyde! I have some pressing questions."
"ugh what do you want?" hyde asked with a pout
"have you seen or heard from Henry? Last I saw him he walked into his office in quite a state, I haven't seen him leave in weeks."
Edward laughed, "oh he's going to be gone for quite a while. needs time to... relax, have some fun, let go."
Lanyon frowned, "but the hot air balloon crew planned to set off on a big mission soon and I thought he'd want to see them go."
"well I'm his personal assistant, so wouldn't I know better?" Edward grew angry, "stop poking your big nose where it doesn't belong, Lanyon."
with that he stormed off. Robert sighed and shook his head
fine then, he thought, I'll just have to find a way in then.
after a long argument with Rachel she gave him the key to Jekyll's office and he opened the door. the once prestine glass cabinets were shattered, the many mirrors too. bottles were strewn about or broken. the room was filled with broken glass, underneath a relatively intact bottle was a note on Henry's desk, which read,
To whoever may be reading this letter,
As I write these words my hands shake, my exhaustion and pain have gotten the better of me. in my absence, Mr.Hyde will handle my affairs. should this become terribly unsafe I have left a guide to find or figure out my whereabouts in the locked cabinet under my desk. Rachel should have the key on her keyring.
the further portion of this letter may only be read by a Dr.Robert Lanyon,
My dearest, Robert, there is much I have not told you of my condition. I can only hope that you may view my decisions after university without judgment. I trust you more to take over the society in my absence, however, Mr.Hyde would not have this.
I have not forgotten the afternoons spent dancing, nor the nights spent reading or talking, when in university you made me the man I am today. While we grew distant, while I started to spend my nights in the society rather than in my old house or your guest room, while you may have thought I forgot I did not. I never could. those nights and days and moments merely had to be stored away.
let them out, my Lanyon,
let me out.
When Robert finished the letter he set it down and looked at Henry's desk, scrambling to unlock the cabinet and get whatever information he could on how to find Jekyll, he found the key that fit and turned the lock hands quivering and pulled out a thick, leather-bound notebook. he opened it and it was filled with alchemical formulas and rough notes. Lanyon quickly stashed the book in his satchel and relocked the key and office, then sped off back to his home.
As he read the rather sloppy notes Jekyll had took Lanyon grew more and more worried. what he found out about hyde made him angry and the way some grave topics were notes were noted as if they were nothing made his skin crawl. the last note he found was dated two months ago,
"in an attempt to balance the ground between Mr.Edward Hyde and I," the note read, "I believe I must find a way to separate our minds further. I understand that matter cannot be created nor destroyed, however for the sake of science I am willing to risk failure or even death. Hyde has as much a right to life as I. I grow weary fending him off from my social affairs, either I will let him have full reign or I will find a way to let us both live."
"oh Henry." Robert whispered to himself. "I must speak with Hyde."
