Chapter 1
17 YEARS LATER
Mika's POV
The bell rang, indicating the start of the school day. I closed the book I was reading and got up from the bench I was sitting down. I have been at this school for three months now and still that bell had the power to make me cringe, they really need to fix that damn thing.
As I looked around at the others dressed similar to me, girls wearing grey skirts with white shirts tucked in and red ties while the boys wore their white shirts with the same red ties and long grey pants. The only difference between me and them is that – what do you know? There is no difference. I blend in even with my violet eyes and uncommon sense of humour.
A few more months and I will be done with high school and off to college, or maybe I will even skip a year. Take a year, or two, to back-pack around the world or whatever continent I land on that I can spend some time exploring.
As I made my way to class, I noticed that my usual History teacher was not in, and I was the last one to make it to class. I quickly apologized to the substitute teacher as I made my way to an empty desk which just so happened to be right in front of the teacher's desk.
Just my luck.
"Okay class, I know you were expecting Mrs. Loneson after your long weekend but I regret to inform you that she has a family emergency and will not be returning for a month." He took a second to survey the class and when his eyes landed on me he paused for a second and shook his head before he continued.
"My name is Mr. Kent and I will be your substitute History teacher for the month until Mrs. Loneson gets back. If you promise to behave, come in on time and do your work I promise we will not have any problems. Any questions?"
I am pretty sure the girl sitting right behind me lifted her hand to ask a question, but Mr. Kent's eyes seemed to be on me but he pointed at the girl behind me, indicating that she could ask her question.
"How old are you Mr. Kent?" The girl asked and I rolled my eyes.
If I was being honest I have to admit that Mr. Kent could easily be considered a hunk. He was lean and muscular (the shirt he wore was not that tight but tight enough to outline his muscular body), he had dark eyes and his hair was black and cut short, his skin was bronze as though he spends a lot of time outdoors and he had an easy smile. A smile that showed dimples and one that he was now flashing at the girl behind me and I promise it made me feel comfortable. It felt familiar.
"I am close to thirty, that is all you need to know, Miss?" Mr. Kent said waiting for the girl to fill in the blank.
"Lisa." She answered seductively and I had to do all that I could to stop myself from snickering at her.
"Well, if that is all. Can you please all take out your history books and turn to page sixty-nine."
The rest of the class passed by in a blur for me because I was too busy focussing on my breathing. I started getting chest pains and felt like my bones were all seconds away from breaking. I focussed on my breathing to stop myself from gasping or crying because of the slight to mildly extreme pain I felt.
When the class finally ended Mr. Kent told me to stay behind while the rest of the class left. I knew for a fact that he had second period off so I wasn't worried that anyone would walk in now and see me like this.
"Are you alright?" Mr. Kent asked.
I was too afraid to open my mouth so I just shook my head no and then gasped when an unexpected blast of pain ripped through my body.
