I looked around the room I was in. The two twin beds that were there looked like someone had a rough night sleeping. The covers were moved everywhere, and the mattresses were hanging off of the edge. I walked over to the kids body and I kneeled down and looked at him. "Sorry you didn't know what was happening, kid. You didn't deserve this." I stood back up and hobbled back towards the door. When I got to the door, I turned around and looked at the boy one last time.
I went to the room next door and was shocked to see what was behind the door. As soon as I walked in, I smelled a horrible smell, it was the smell of death. I pulled my shirt over my nose to try and block out the stench. But it didn't work as well as I had planned. I walked more into the room and I found three dead bodies laying there. They looked as if they were a family. The sight made me miss my parents even more.
Then I heard Josh call my name. I walked out of the room and called out to Josh asking where he was. Then I saw his head poke out from two stories above. I walked over to the stairs and made my way upward. There were a lot of steps missing, and most were covered in blood and guts. Once I made my way to Josh, he showed me the room he had just found. Inside was a note along with fresh blood stains next to it.
The note read; Dear Robert and Isaiah, While I thank you very much for trying to help me, you don't need to. My time has come and I do not wish to trouble you anymore than I already have. When you find this note, I want you to go and tell Abby and Josh about me. I am sorry for causing so much trouble. Sincerely, Grace.
Right next to the "E" in Grace I saw a water mark. I looked over to Josh to see he had started to cry. I turned back around and looked back down at the note. I turned to look back at Josh but he had left the room. I looked around the room to see if I could find anything. When I had checked behind the doors, and in the bathroom I hadn't found anything. However, when I looked into the closet I saw a sight that I wish I had never seen.
Right there, in that closet, was Grace hanging. I took out my knife and I cut her down. On her neck I saw a bite mark. I lifted her hair and I saw that she had shot herself in the head. The sight made me start to tear up. I put her down on the floor and I walked over to Josh. "Her body is in there, I found her in the closet." I said. Josh immediately bolted into the room I had emerged from. He came out seconds later holding her body.
There was still no sign of Abby anywhere. But I could tell Josh just wanted to go home, so we left. I didn't want to leave him alone because I don't know what could happen to him. He is the last family member I have, I can't lose him. We had made our way through the path we had made. Josh was still carrying Grace. We hadn't said a word the whole time we were walking.
We had made it to the community, but something had happened while we were gone and everything was in flames. The front gate had fallen over, and Overwatch was hanging right where she would normally be standing. At the sight, I dropped everything I had in my hands. I immediately bolted past the fallen front gate and ran immediately to the doctors office. Right there, in his makeshift crib, was Charlie. I hobbled as fast as I could to him and I checked his pulse.
Nothing. My eyes started to tear up. I picked up the infant and I walked outside. I put Charlie back down on the ground and I walked to where my house used to be. It had gone up in flames and there really wasn't much left of anything. I went to go investigate it. Looking around I couldn't find anything, but I heard someones voice. It was Peter. I looked deeper into the fire and I saw Peter, with his arm outstretched towards me. It didn't look like Peter anymore. There was nothing I could do. So I watched as Peter screamed in pain as he was being burned alive.
Before he died, he looked over to me one last time and cried, "I'm sorry." After he said that, his arm dropped. I knew he was dead. I started walking back to Josh, and on my way I saw that Dr. Plum was sitting in the chair Josh had sat in last night. I immediately hobbled over to him. His eyes were wide open and his mouth was half open. Right above his eyes were three gunshot holes. I looked at his neck and saw that it had been slit open.
I heard a window break and I looked over to the Chief's house where the sound had come from. I watched as Carl had emerged from the inside with a rope around his neck. "CARL NO!" I yelled as I ran to him. He gave me one last look and smiled. He then proceeded to walk right off of the ledge he had been standing on. I watched as Carl struggled to keep his last breath, then all of a sudden he stopped moving. But his body was still swinging.
I dropped to my knees and looked at the ground. After staying there for a second I went to retrieve my revolver. As I grabbed it I pointed it at my head and closed my eyes. I thought about how happy everyone had looked before we left. I remembered what Peter had said to me as Josh and I had started to walk away. Then I remembered the promise I had made the Chief. I put my finger on the trigger and I shot. CLICK. I opened my eyes and pulled the trigger a few more times. CLICK CLICK CLICK. I looked to see how many bullets were in there, it was empty.
I let go of my revolver and watched as it hit the ground. I stared at it for a second then went to grab at my knife. I closed my eyes and stretched my arm out and was about to lunge my knife at my neck, when a hand grabbed my arm. I opened my eyes to see Abby. I dropped my knife and stood up, and as soon as I had gotten up Abby embraced me.
I put my arms around her and I held her closer than I ever had held anyone before.
