"In the flush of love's light, we dare be brave. And suddenly, we see that love costs all we are and will ever be. Yet, it is only love which sets us free." — Maya Angelou

The breeze fluttered the sleeves of his jacket, his fingers twitching from the cold air. Snow tumbled from the sky, catching onto the windows of the large house. The hood of his jacket covered his brown curls from the snowy assault, protecting him as he strolled into the backyard. He entered through the back gate with a buoyant smile adorning his face. He was always happy after going for his morning jog, refreshing his mind to prepare for the day.
He jostled over to his friends who sat on the large patch of grass, greeting a few of the other pack members on his way to them. Josiah was admired by most of the pack and his classmates– and, occasionally, the teachers – for his congeniality, his desirable features, and his commendable football skills. The girls swooned over the brown, soft and curly mop on top of his head that they all wanted to run their fingers through, his light brown skin complexion, and his light brown eyes that shone so bright in the right lighting. He had a jawline sharp like broken glass, and God-worthy abs thanks to the immense training he endured as a child to prepare for his destined future.
Surprisingly, despite his obvious popularity and his unmatched attractiveness, Josiah had never been in a relationship. Well, that is if you don't count in kindergarten when Rachel Barblin walked up to him while he was on the swing set and demanded that he'd eat lunch with her, then proceeded to tell the whole school they were boyfriend and girlfriend.
Josiah chooses to suppress that memory to this day.
He didn't see a point in getting in a relationship if the person isn't his destined mate. Mates, short for soulmates, are your other half. The Goddess assigns each wolf a mate when they are born, but they don't discover their mate until the full moon after their 18th birthday. In order to officially become alpha, Josiah has to find his mate and – well, mate with her. Unfortunately, he has yet to find his other half, delaying the process of becoming alpha. He's almost scared that he might not even have a mate. He turned 18 almost six months ago, and there had already been two full moons. He figured maybe he was just destined to be alone, a troubling thought, but the only plausible one.
"It's Josiah Vice, the greatest football star of our generation!" his best friend Lola squealed, jumping up and down like a fan girl.
"Oh my God, it's really him." Angelica pitched in, fanning her face in faux awe. "Can I get your autograph, Mr. Vice?"
Josiah laughed, playfully shoving his friends while they mocked him. He took a seat on one of the lawn chairs beside the pool. It was nearly 50℉ outside, but despite the cold air, Josiah felt warm. It was times like this that he appreciated his abnormal body heat. He could stay outside for hours in the snow before he got too cold, compared to humans who could only stand the low temperature for a couple of minutes. "Good afternoon to you both as well."
