When wall Maria was broken, when Shiganshina fell victim to the Titan onslaught, the Adler family had no reason to fear.
Living with her twin brother Leon and her father Basil, Lucy's life before the fallout was quiet. Her family lived in the outer land behind wall Maria and she wasn't allowed to socialize with other children, so she became quite reliant on her twin as her only friend. Her mother was convicted and killed by soldiers when Lucy was only a baby, as she spoke out against the King and was eventually revealed to have snuck out beyond the wall for many years.
After the Titans broke through, Lucy and Leon were both taken and separated by two titans that her father commanded before he was taken away by soldiers
This is the titan that took Lucy. She later named him Sabore

Lucy was raised among the Titans for years, thinking that her twin and father were both now dead, she saw no reason to return to a life trapped within the walls.
When she was 16, she was discovered by Eren Yeager and was forcibly captured by the scouts. After some struggles, she agreed to join the scouts as a weapon against the Titans, like Eren. However, she doesn't believe that she needs to kill titans, instead, she controls them, as their alpha. This, of course, makes her less popular among the people who have lost friends and family to the beasts.
