"I don't think I can wait much longer!" Lacey quietly snapped at Joe. "It's not like I have a choice, here!"
"I know that, sweetness. But he would never forget that he wasn't here for..."
"What exactly are you waiting for, Mr. Knight? Are you afraid?" One of the nurses laughed. In all honesty, Joe was petrified. He knew nothing about babies, or birth, or anything like that, except for the toddler nieces and nephews he had.
"Maybe I could go call him again," he said to Lacey, so that only she heard. She grabbed his hand, fear etched on her pale face.
"Don't leave me," she pleaded. "Joe, I need you."
It was then Joe realized the perfect way to make everything up to Jordan and Lacey. He needed to be there when Jordan's child was born.
"Of course," he whispered. "I'm not going anywhere."
The doctor burst into the room. "And what have we here?"
"Took you long enough," Joe muttered.
The doctor examined Lacey. "Well, now all we do is hurry up and wait."
"You might not have to..." Lacey was interrupted by a huge contraction, which made her crush Joe's hand in hers.
"Doc, I know you like, have to do whatever the baby kinda wants to, but couldn't you wait a bit longer to have her push?" The doctor looked at Joe questioningly.
"Why, Mr. Knight? Don't you want your baby to be born as soon as possible?"
"My baby?" Joe squeaked. He realized now why the nurses had been teasing him. They thought he was queasy about watching his baby be born. "No, you don't understand..."
"Your name is on the form, here," the doctor pointed out.
"Yeah, but it's a mistake. The nurse in Admissions, she just asked my name, she didn't say why..." Joe trailed off, watching Lacey smile through her pain.
"Wait I told her my name was Joe McIntyre not Jordan Knight " Joe insisted
"I'll have to remember this one..." she gasped, laughing though it hurt like hell.
"Just who exactly is the father of this child?" The doctor snapped.
"I am!" Jordan burst through the door, pulling on the smock and cap.
"Jordan!" Lacey exclaimed, her face lighting up just before another contraction hit her.
"Sorry, Joe. I got here as fast as I could," Jordan said, hugging his friend .
"No problem," Joesaid, retreating into a corner. Jordan took Lacey's hand in his.
"I'm so sorry, my sweet Lacey. I wouldn't have wanted to miss this for the world."
Before the doctor could even get off of his stool, Lacey felt the need to push, and didn't wait for the command. Jordan put an arm around her, and helped her to lean forward. With a yell, she focused on the bald spot on top of the doctor's head, and pushed. The doctor barely had time to hold out his arms before he found a baby in his hands. "A boy!" He said. Jordan smiled down at Lacey, who leaned back in his arms. But before she could get comfortable, another pain washed over her.
"Jordan, I think..." she panted, pushing again. The doctor quickly handed the first baby to a nurse and gently helped out a second one.
"A girl!"
"Two? Twins?" Jordan looked down at Lacey in shock. She smiled weakly.
"Reeve thought there might have been two, and the doctor here in Boston confirmed it. I wanted to surprise you."
"Y-you...you did, babydoll ." A nurse quickly slipped a stool behind him as he sat down, shaken. "Twins..."
A nurse handed the boy to Jordan and the girl to Lacey. "What are their names?" She asked kindly.
"Jordan Joseph ," Lacey said, looking up at Jordan for his agreement "and Donna Joanna ." She smiled over at Joe as a tear slipped down his cheek.
Jordan kissed the top of her head "You did good babydoll" he murmured ,his voice thick with emotion.
