"Trust is a dangerous game"

It was a dark night, even though snow was falling from the sky. The wind was howling from outside of the house. A large sound of something falling scared Jack awake from a dream. He started trembling and crying.

Dawn awoke from the wind and snow pounding against her window. She listened to the wind and noticed a small whimper from across the hall. Dawn got up from her bed. She went across the hall and found Jack in a ball on his bed.

"Jack?"Dawn said softly, "Are you okay?"
He shook his head and jumped when the snow hit his window. Dawn sat down next to him and hugged him.

"Do you want to lay with me tonight?" Jack nodded and Dawn picked him up and brought him to her room.

Dawn slipped into her bed and tried to pull Jack from her grip, but Jack shook his head in fear. Dawn sighed and rubbed his back. She waited until his breathing calmed until she went to bed.

Dawn was awoken by a loud crash downstairs. She looked beside her to see Jack was still asleep. Dawn crept out of bed and grabbed a bat that was conveniently placed next to her bed.

She slowly walked down the stairs trying not to make a noise. She was halfway down the stairs when one of the steps creaked under her weight. She hoped that whoever was here did not hear the noise. Dawn saw a shadow leave the kitchen and go into the living room.

She reached the bottom of the stairs trying to not make as much noise as possible. She tightened her grip on the bat but tensed when she saw the figure come out of the living room. Dawn hid behind a wall and sucked in a breath. She tried to slow her breathing as she listened for the quiet footsteps of the intruder.

She heard him come closer and swung the bat with as much force she could muster. The figure caught it and pushed her to the ground.

Now Dawn had no weapon and had no way to defend herself other than her hands, but even if she tried to defend herself, she couldn't from her being in a state of shock.

The figure that Dawn had been looking at pulled out a knife and was about to stab her when Logan came out of his room with a gun.

"Put the knife down." The figure looked at him and put his hands up in 'surrender', but when Logan was about to take the knife, the intruder was faster and stabbed him in the abdomen. Logan then fell and dropped the gun on the floor.

"Dad!" Dawn yelled as blood drained from her fathers body.

The figure took one last look at Dawn and left the house knowing that the cops were on the way. Dawn looked at the figure one last time and then quickly went to her father.

"Ella! Call 9-11! Hey, keep your eyes open. It's gonna be okay." Dawn put pressure on the wound, as Ella dialed the number.

"Dawn, I'll be fine. I've, I've never told you how, how sorry I am for, for not keeping my, my promise." Dawn shook her head.

"Dad it'll be okay. Just please stay awake." She let a tear slip from her eye.

About a minutelater, the ambulance came and took him from Dawn's grip. She protested, but James held her back from running after them. While he held her he had his own tears in his eyes. James has never seen Dawn like this, but Jack has. All of them had tears streaming down their faces.

The memory of the moment of Logan getting stabbed kept replaying in Dawn's mind. The blood, the look on his face was as if we were okay if he died.

She had a memory almost like this. One where her entire was turned upside down.

"Mom, I got your message. Where are you?" A seventeen-year-old girl with brown hair and brown eyes called out.

The girl was looking for her mother. She had gotten a message that told her to meet at a warehouse in Brooklyn, New York.

She had kept walking and calling out for her mother until she saw something red and what looked like to be a body.

"Hello? Mom is that you?" She walked closer and found what she had been looking for.

"Mom! No, no, no this can't be happening. Mom." The girl sobbed and hugged her mom even if she got covered in blood.

She pulled out her phone and dialed 9-11.

Dawn was pulled from her memory when James led her to the living room and sat her down. Dawn looked over to see the pool of blood where her dad once laid. Jack came up to her and hugged his big sister.

"Dawn, I'm scared."

"I am too Bubba, I am too." She hugged him tightly scared that even if she let go that he would be taken away too, even though she didn't want to show it.

Dawn released Jack and stood up. She took a glance at the blood, then looked back to her brothers.

"I'm going to take a shower. Jack, you should change, then James can you watch him for me? I'll be a bit" Dawn hiccupped and saw James nod.

Dawn went upstairs careful not to step in the blood. Once she got there, she stripped her clothes and got into the shower.

When she was in the shower Dawn had questions and imagines of the night playing through her head.

How could the person get into the house?

Why did he have a knife?

Why did he seem familiar and how would she know him?

And most of all,

Was the person trying to kill me?
