Please enjoy the story of Willow and Sawyer.
I turn the last corner and see the house Sawyer and I have been living in. We had to sell the house we grew up in and now we have a one-roomed house with no windows and sheets as insulation. When I walk inside Sawyer is laying on one of the two small mats that we use as beds. I walk to the other bed and cringe at the noise it makes, hoping I won't wake Sawyer. Too late, Sawyer sits up and rubs the sleep from his eyes. He yawns then he looks at me.
"Please don't be mad at me," he says.
"why would I be mad at you?" I ask in a concerned tone.
"I got a job," he says.
"Sawyer, that's great! Why would I be mad?"
He looks down at his feet his eyes brimming with sadness. "It's in the mines," he says, his voice almost inaudible.
"Oh," I say softly.
Our father worked in the mines until the day when there was a slate fall, a very large rock fell on top of my father. It was his cause of death. Mother died only months later from grief. "Sawyer," I begin,
"just come back. Please." He nods.
People say I'm smart for my age. I think it's just that I had to learn a long time ago. I have no family taking care of me except for Sawyer but sometimes I feel like I have to take care of him. When people like Ruben say I'm smart I tell them that I never even went to school. My mother taught me some of what I know and I had to learn the rest on my own.
When I walk to the knitting factory is when I have time to think. I enter the large grey warehouse with black smoke pouring out of two chimneys on the top. before I even have time to walk to my station Ruben corners me and says,
"Hi Willow, I just want to say that I apologize on Dylan's behave. I'm so sorry for all that my brother has said to you and I hope we can still be friends?."
"of course," I say.
"Oh also," Ruben starts, "there's a big meeting, they're firing more people and they want every worker to be there."
"Thanks for telling me Ruben, I'm sure I would have missed it," I tell her sincerely.
As we walk into the room where the meeting is Ruben grabs my hand and says, "I hope I don't get fired. Or you."
I smile at her and say "Me too."
The director stands up and says, "Thank you all for coming. As you all know, Lots of girls come here to work and some are better than others. We only have so much space and money so some of you may be fired. I will now read the list of names of the people who got fired, Hannah Allcock, Taylor Sparrow, Adele Poppy, Ruben Scott, and Willow song.
