It was half past six on a Friday afternoon and I was about to head to Apartment 1B for dinner when a British number was calling me on FaceTime Audio. Although unsure as to who it could be, I decided to pick up the call because doing so felt like the right thing to do.
"Hi, who is this?" I asked, taking the phone off of loudspeaker and holding it against my left ear - force of habit. I was always told that holding the phone against the right ear can cause some radioactive damage, or whatever it is. "Yes, this is Charlotte Tilbury. Am I speaking to Alessandra?" I was in utter disbelief. One of my favourite British make-up artists was calling me, but for what? I had no clue.
"Hi Charlotte," I said, trying to play it extremely cool. "Hi darling," she responded, her voice as pleasant as it was on her YouTube channel. "Vera was telling me that you'll be permanently moving to London in mid-April."
I was not expecting Vera to contact anyone on my behalf. Although working for her has been a dream come true, I wanted to work in the beauty industry - specifically in the PR/Communications department - and Charlotte Tilbury has always been a dream employer. Despite working for Vera all the way from Manila, I always knew that I needed to be in London, my favourite city, ASAP.
"That is correct," I stated as a matter of factly. "She also mentioned that you wanted to work as a PR/Communications head," Charlotte answered. "I'm actually looking for someone to fill the PR Head role and Vera put in a good word for you."
I didn't know what to say. Vera - my boss, someone I considered to be the big sister I never had - contacted Charlotte Tilbury on my behalf, mentioning that I wanted to occupy that role. My brain was telling me to "shut the fuck up and say yes" whilst I was still processing the news.
"So, will you be willing to fill that role?" She asked, getting rid of the silence. I was still in disbelief, despite having been on the phone for nearly ten minutes. "I will," I responded, trying not to sound like the biggest fangirl on the planet.
"Great! Vera said your contract with her ends on the 30th of April, but I was actually wondering if you could start the following day," she mentioned, seeming to have been jotting stuff down whilst on the call.
"I'd love to," I got back to her, checking my calendar just to make sure I didn't have anything scheduled for that day. "Great," She exclaimed, adding "by the way, since you will be in London next month, can we do our contract signing on February 5? I would love for you to see the office and meet everyone."
"Of course, I'll see you then," I answered, shaking due to instant happiness. "See you darling!" She said, bidding me adieu.
