Thunder.
People ran for cover at the first signs of rain. It came suddenly. Rain fell down heavily onto the town and its people. The gloomy weather forced the citizens to hide themselves and lock their doors early. The once noise town was quiet. The only noise was the sound of lightning appearing in the night sky.
A six year old girl with dark red hair and light green eyes slept peacefully in her bed. Oblivious to the stormy weather. Her name was Jean Grey, the second daughter of John and Elaine Grey. She was startled awake by the cries of her younger sister. She threw off her comfortable fuzzy blankets and crept to her sister's room. The youngest Grey was only two years old and was already adored by her family. Elaine Grey was blessed with three beautiful girls all with red hair that ran through the whole family. Unfortunately no boys but the parents didn't seem to mind. Their eldest daughter, Sara was thirteen and shared with Jean. The girls separated by seven years never saw eye-to-eye. They were too different to get along. They were more like strangers than sisters and the occasional argument happened every now and then. It might have been the lack of sisterly bond that pushed Jean to grow up faster to be the big sister that she didn't get the chance to have to Selena, the youngest Grey.
Jean stood outside the room of her baby sister's room. Selena's name painted onto the door in colourful italics. Jean opened the door, entered the room and closed the door silently hoping to not scare her sister then she already was. She switched on the light to the dark room and let her eyes adjust to the pastel colours of her sister's room. She walked towards a white cot placed near the window in the corner of the room. Her eyes landed on the small baby moving around in the cot. The baby's cries echoed inside the room. The thunder had probably scared her.
"Selena", Jean whispered her sister's name lovingly trying to not scare her further.
Selena's cries ended immediately as she heard her sister's voice. Light blue eyes stared at Jean's green ones. A giggle left Selena's mouth. Jean reached into the cot and held her sister's tiny hand in hers.
"Don't be scared anymore little sister. I'm here for you and I'll always protect you. I'll never leave you ever", Jean promised the little girl unaware of the lengths she'd take in the future to keep that promise.
That seemingly small promise lead to challenges that nobody should ever have to face. Jean and Selena's bond is tested.
