Emma woke up to the sound of her alarm blaring. Was it 6:30 already? She let out a groan and slid her index finger across her phone screen to stop the noise. She stretched as she walked into her bathroom, turning on the water to as hot as she could stand it. A good hot shower always helped her wake up.
It was the first day of Emma's senior year. She was excited, but sad at the same time. She loved high school and had made so many friendships along the way. She got anxious even thinking about graduating and being thrown out into the real world. She snapped out of her thoughts as she stepped into the scalding water.
Once she was finished, she wrapped her hair in a towel and threw on an outfit she had picked out the night before. A white button-up crop top and a pair of mom jeans, paired with dainty gold jewelry. She did several 360's in the mirror before deciding her outfit looked okay.
She quickly blow-dried and curled her hair loosely, careful not to burn herself like usual. Not wanting to go all out, she did her simple makeup routine and finished it off with setting spray.
She grabbed her backpack, purse, and phone before heading downstairs.
"Good morning, Mom," Emma said as she reached over and grabbed an apple from the bowl on the kitchen counter.
It was just Emma and her mom, Nancy, against the world. Nancy and Emma's dad were 18 when they found out Nancy was pregnant. Her father felt like a baby would ruin his life at such a young age, and was never involved. Nancy was left to raise Emma alone, only with the help of Nancy's parents.
"Morning, Sweetheart," Nancy replied, looking up from her computer for only a moment. "You look beautiful,"
"Thank you, momma," Emma smiled, before taking a bite from the apple.
"I have to take a picture. It's your last first day of high school," Nancy reminded her as she picked her her phone.
"Alright," Emma agreed with a smile, wanting to make her mom happy. She placed the apple and her bags on the counter before standing against the wall.
"Say, senior!" Nancy yelled as she held the phone at eye level.
"Senior!" Emma said through a smile.
"You've grown up to fast, Honey," Nancy said as she walked over to Emma.
"Mom, don't. You're going to make me cry." Emma said with a pouty face.
"I'm so proud of you, and I love you more than you know," Nancy said as she wrapped her up in a hug.
"I love you too, Mom," Emma said, hugging her back tightly.
After a few more seconds her mom pulled away and wiped a tear that had fallen down her cheek. "You better get going. You don't want to be late."
Emma gave her mom a fake smile as she grabbed her bags and apple, before heading out the door.
