(The whole story: Laynes POV)
The year was 1996. I have some time to myself 'cause me and the band are gonna take a break from touring for a while. Maybe even years, I dunno though. I was sitting at home, sitting on my floor thinking, (which I did a lot.) Wondering what I was gonna do, now that I had a break from being on the road, and doing rehearsals and all that. I didnt wanna sit at home and be alone, mostly cause I hated it. I got up, and walked to my phone..deciding I'd call up one of my buddies Eddie Vedder. Well, we were mutuals really, so I thought now would be a good time to mend a friendship with him.
I dialed, and it rang 3 times before Eddie picked up.
"Hello?" Eddie voiced, sounding confused.
"Oh hey! Its Layne? Layne Staley." I answered
"Oh, hey man! What's up?"
"Not much. I know its weird..decline if you wanna..but uh, you wanna hang out?"
It got quiet for a second. I heard another voice in the room, but couldnt make out what it said, then I heard Eddie say: "Its Staley."
Then I heard the voice say, "Oh Cool." Then I heard Eddie let out a light chuckle, and a quiet "Yea." -- which made me smile."Hey sorry man. But dude..of course!" He assured me.
"Oh ..alright, cool!" I exclaimed."Meet you at the 'Off Ramp Cafe' ?"
"Sounds good. Anyone playing tonight?"
"I think Iron Maiden is?"
"Oh..dope. alright I'll see you later." I told him.
"Alright, buh bye."
"Bye."
Then I hung up the phone.
I replayed the part of the call, when Eddie chuckled, and softly said "yea." When him and- whoever that was- acknowledged my presence over the phone. What was the chuckle for? I thought to myself. It probably didn't mean nothin' but of course it made me wonder. I was..always thinkin' bout stuff.
