Opening her eyes Brandy saw the bare wall of her room, lifting her head she finds herself on her floor. Sitting up she sees she has fallen out of her bed once again, with a sigh Brandy stands and dusts herself off. Then she goes to freshen up before heading to the kitchen to grab a piece of bread, she pops it into the toaster and waits for it. She gazes out the window into the neighborhood of Grove Street, towards the other small houses in her area. It was small and the people there were friendly to an extent. The only drawback was that they committed crimes and wanted her to do the same. Brandy grew sad as she remembered what her grandmother told her yesterday;
Brandy: Nana Chio, I want to go to school. I want a higher education, not to mention finish high school.
Chio: You will not, you will follow my lead, you will resume living with me and be like your grandfather, cept you will be the first female leader of the gang.
Brandy: I do not wish to be a gang leader. I want more in life, does that not matter to you?
Chio: What do you know of this world? Listen to your grandmother and obey me. Now go to your room and think about it. Do you want to live a lie or live your life to the fullest?
With the pop of the toaster, Brandy grabs the piece of toast and spreads jam onto it before taking a bite. She still doesn't want what her grandmother has chosen for her, in fact, she's practically eighteen, she is capable of choosing her own path. With a determined nod she heads to her room, carefully packing what little she already owns and heads out her bedroom window. There she looks around the small backyard and climbs the gated fence onto the main street, there she walks the path passed a gas station and down a road headed north, when she stops at a crosswalk, she looks around at the various colors of gang members loitering the area. She tugs the strap of her green duffel bag, making sure to keep tight just in case one of the members decided to try snatching it from her.
When all of a sudden shots were heard and drivers begin panicking, they drive their vehicles recklessly trying to get away. Brandy decides to not wait for the light to change and begins making her way across the street only to find herself in the air. Upon opening her eyes she finds herself lying on her back, the glare of the afternoon sun gazing down upon her body. She tries moving only to wince at the pain of her side and finding her breathing difficult. Her head rang as she tried to figure out what had happened, after a good hour she has pieced together what happened, one of the vehicles hit her and didn't stop to check. With a soft cry as she tried once again moving, luckily no one was shooting, unfortunately drivers passed, none stopped to help her, not once. As she felt the sun slowly make it's way across the sky towards the horizon, Brandy felt she was to die here, her attempt of trying to runaway ending with her being struck down by a vehicle.
Brandy closed her eyes to await death when sirens rang in the air, she opens her eyes to find a policeman standing over her;
Policeman: Ma'am, are you alright? Can you hear me?
Brandy: I...y-yes...it...hurts....
Policeman: Alright ma'am, I will get you some help.
Brandy watches as the policeman calls in for ems to their location. Once finished he kneels and assesses her wounds, Brandy tries to answer his questions but it is difficult, for she was told since she was a babe to never talk to people outside of Grove Street, especially police officers.
Policeman: Ma'am what is your name?
Brandy: Brandy...Davis
Policeman: Alright and where were you headed?
Brandy: I was...
Policeman: Was what? Where were you coming from? What happened?
Brandy tried to think of what to say, though honestly she couldn't say she was running away...but what else could she be doing, especially with a green duffel bag, luckily they did not ask what was in the bag.
Brandy: I was coming from Grove Street and shots rang out here, everybody went crazy and one of them hit me.
Policeman: Where were you headed?
Brandy: Away.
Policeman: Away from what?
Brandy: Everything.
Policeman: I see on your record you are 17, you realize we will need to contact your guardian?
Brandy: ...please don't...
Policeman: Sorry, protocol. Who is your guardian?
Brandy: My grandmother...Chio Davis.
Policeman: Thank you Ma'am.
Brandy watches the policeman stand when a sheriff arrives, he explains the situation to him before EMS arrive, they tend to Brandy and help her into the ambulance, then they transport her to Pillbox Hospital. There they stitch up her wound upon her forehead, cast her broken right arm, ice her twisted left ankle, give her pain killers for her broken ribs, and scan her for a mild concussion.
Brandy looks out the hospital window as she lies in bed, wondering what she will do once the police inform her grandmother she's in the hospital, then her mind turns to what her grandmother will say. Closing her eyes she tries to imagine this as a bad dream, only to open them and see the same hospital room. With a sigh Brandy decides she will deal with whatever comes when her grandmother comes for her.
