This, My World

I spoke for this. I spoke in the streets, in the squares, of a realm united under one ruler, a mighty nation that made neither concessions nor compromises and knew neither weakness nor need. I spoke, and they listened - few at first, but steadily, inexorably, their numbers grew. Scores, then hundreds, then thousands came to see, stayed to listen in the scorching heat, the bitter cold, the driving rain. I rallied them from makeshift platforms with the promise of a future without defeat, and they listened enrapt, clung to each echoing word. I called them to arms, and they came to my aid.

This, my purpose.

I stood for this. I stood firm at the forefront of my legion as the pavements ran red with the blood of cowards and the air rang sharp with rapid fire and shattered glass. In the final hour, I stood with my comrades in the heart of the blazing capital and watched resolute as the last of our enemies fell slain before the wall. And in the red dawn, I stood amidst the clearing smoke, the blackened ruins, and called upon my people to build a new city in honour of the victory and in memory of the fallen.

This, my nation.

I killed for this. I killed all those who dared to defy me, all those who felt they could fail me. My hand knew no lenity, no leniency; for my detractors were all equal in the face of retribution. One by one, they were sought and destroyed by my steadfast cohorts, liquidated with such speed and precision that their very existence ceased to exist. One by one, they joined the ranks of my betrayers, nameless and vanquished. I killed them all for my government's sake.

This, my state.

I live for this. I live for days of splendour when the scarlet banners fan the sky above my head, and beneath my feet the paved earth trembles with the surge of swelling fanfares and the pulse of marching feet. I live for moments of thunder when my citadel rings to its heights with the sound of my name, and moments of silence when my people listen enrapt as I tell them of all I have done. I tell them of the battle I fought. The empire I built. The traitors I felled. The promise I kept. I tell them of distant horizons where my armies strive, unresting and unstoppable, to drive the frontiers ever forward; where each red dawn brings a new conquest, a new triumph. I live for this, and so do they all.

This, my world.
