Hope walked through the doorway, looking around with her sword ready in hand. She took a once over and dropped her pack.
“All clear!” She called. A few minutes later, a group of people came into view. First was Xiumin, followed by Sehun, Tao, Luhan, and lastly Jong-in. “Where’s my dad?” Hope asked, quickly running out the door looking around. She didn’t see her father’s figure anywhere in sight.
“He had to use the bathroom. Said he would be right back.” Xiumin called, and tugged at Hope’s sleeve. “Come back in. Your gonna get sick.” Xiumin worriedly said.
“Okay. Fine. If he’s not back in 5 I’m gonna go out looking for him.” Hope walked behind Xiumin dodging the fallen pieces of cement, jumping for one to another in a fluid motion. Once they walked through the long hall, Hope saw the other men sitting in a semicircle talking amongst themselves. Hope walked up and sat next to Jong-in and grabbed a nearby stick. She started to draw mindlessly in the dirt, creating little images of life before the disease started.
Jong-in looked over his shoulder at Hope and watched as she made soft strokes in the dirt. Luhan slightly hit him on the arm and smirked at Jong-in.
“Make a move man. Talk to her. Something.” Luhan whispered, nudging Jong-in in Hope’s direction. Jong-in laughed to himself and scooted a little closer to Hope. Just as Jong-in was about to say something, Juan ran into the room, completely out of breath. Hope jumped up and ran over to him.
“What’s wrong? Dad, what’s going on.” The only thing that Juan was able to do was point up at the holes in the wall. Everyone looked up at the holes and saw bright green vines creep through. Hope sprinted for her sword only to be pushed be pushed behind Jong-in.
“Stay back.” He ordered. More vines started to come from all angles, and every creeves possible. Just as Hope saw an exit on the other end of the collapsed building it was crushed.
“God damn it.” She muttered to herself. The vines started to creep closer to Jong-in. Suddenly Hope pushed Jong-in to the left and stood in front of the green vine. She started to mutter a chant out loud that caused the vines to stop and started to retreat, but only slightly. Hope looked over at the exit that she saw earlier and saw that it was now slightly opened. “Run for that exit now!” She yelled. Juan made no time in sprinting over jumping through the hole. Soon followed by Sehun, Xiumin, Luhan and Tao.
Jong-in came up next to Hope and slightly grabbed her arm, pulling her focus away from the vines.
“Come on.” He muttered and started to pull her to the exit.
“Jong-in-” She began but was cut out by a scream that was her own. The bright green vines had wrapped itself around her arm and was now moving quickly up her arm. “You have to let go!” She said and began to mutter once again. The searing pain going up and down her arm. Jong-in looked at her and clearly saw that she was in pain.
“I’m not leaving you.” He said and tugged once again on her arm, trying to get her away from the vine. The bright green vine felt the tugging that Jong-in was doing and it started to turn a dark yellow. Hope screamed once again, and ripped her arm away from Jong-in.
“GO! I’LL BE RIGHT BEHIND YOU!” She screamed at the top of her lungs and shoved Jong-in towards the door. She took a deep breath and for the third time started the chant but louder this time. The vines responded and began to reseed back towards the holes and Hope ran for the door, just barely making it through. She fell in a heap on the ground. She lifted her head up a little bit thinking that one of the guys was talking to her, only for it to be other humans walking around her.
Hope shakily got to one knee and took a look around. She saw live, walking, talking, human beings all around her. Jong-in kneeled right in front of Hope, and held a hand out to her.
“Come on. Your dad found something.” He said in a low whisper as he also took a look around. Hope took his hand, and stood up, using Jong-in as a crutch. Seeing that she was having a hard time walking, Jong-in wrapped his arm around Hope’s waist and took on most of her weight. They slowly made their way to where Juan was standing partially jumping up and down.
“Look at what I found!” He stepped aside and showed Jong-in and Hope a sign.
“Facility for the uncontaminated. Sign up at wagon.” the sign read.
“I already signed up. Come on let’s go.” Juan started to slowly walk towards the wagon’s. Once they reached the wagon that Juan was supposedly assigned to, he jumped in and Hope quickly walked to a lady holding a clipboard.
“Um. Excuse me miss. Am-” The lady raised a hand and straighten her back.
“There is no more sign ups! And no more room in the facilities!” She called. She looked at Hope and shrugged her shoulders. “Sorry hon. Your stuck here.” And just walked away. Hope was left standing in the middle of the dirt road. Slowly, she turned and saw her dad rolling off.
Her heart sped up as she saw Juan slowly wave and blow a kiss to her.
“No. This can’t happen. Not again.” Hope thought to herself as she broke into a sprint running for her father’s wagon. “Dad!” She screamed as she reached a hand out to him. Hope could feel the tears trying to escape, but she wasn’t going to give up. She was not going to lose her father like she lost her mother. He was the last thing that she had left and she was gonna try to keep him.
Just as their fingers brushed together, Hope was yanked back, and was soon being dragged. Her heart felt as if it was collapsing. She watched her father roll off into the sun set, never to be seen again.
“Hope!” Jong-in ran up to her and gently lifted her up off the ground. He turned Hope to face him and softly brushed the dirt in her face. Hope lifted her eyes to look at Jongin's and that’s when she let the tears fall. She wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face in his chest.
“I-I lost him. I-I can’t g-get him back.” She cried, only for it to be muffled by being held so closely to Jong-in. He slowly rubbed her back, and they both slowly fell to the ground in each others arms.
“It’s gonna be okay. You have me. And I’m not gonna let you go.”
Once the sun finally set, Jong-in and Hope walked back into the rundown building and walked over to Xiumin.
“Hey. We found rooms we can sleep in. You two are gonna share a room. Is that okay?” Xiumin asked looking back and forth between the two.
Before Hope could even answer, Jong-in responded for the both if them. “Of course.” The three walked off towards the tall building, and entered their seperate rooms. Jong-in jumped on the single bed in the room and got under one of the blankets, wrapping himself in it.
“Aish. I missed this so much.” He said as he laid his head down on the single pillow. Hope chuckled and took the throw blanket that was on the end of the bed and laid down on the floor, using her arm as a pillow. “Oh no no no.” Jong-in said got off the bed, picking up Hope bridal style, before he gently threw her on the bed.
Jong-in jumped over Hope and laid down next to her, moving the pillow under both of their heads, and sneaked his arm under Hope’s head. Than he took the blanket and put it over Hope’s arms, and finally wrapping his arm around her waist as he kissed her head.
“I love you Hope.” But no answer was given as she was already asleep.
