The stage is bare except for three chairs all in row.
Lights up on GETHIN and ELLA, a man and a woman in their mid-twenties, sitting next to each other in the left and middle chairs. The last one on the right remains empty. Ella wears a black dress with her hair in up in a stylish bun, while holding black heels in her lap. Gethin wears a suit with a dark purple tie. He holds a cell phone in one of his hands.
Ella: Do you know if he left a note?
Gethin: He didn't.
Ella: Oh.
Gethin nods. He looks down at his cell phone and appears to be scrolling through something. He shakes his head and puts the phone in his pocket. Ella fiddles with a ring on her finger.
Ella: Do you remember the time that all of us went to the canyon?
Gethin barely moves his head in acknowledgement.
Ella: I think it was May. Was it? No, it was July because that was the summer that we thought the sun was going to eventually burn up the earth because of how hot it was and that's why we were going to the canyon because the water was always icy cold. We all knew that he couldn't swim but we convinced him that it'd be worth it to come with us. He just stayed at the edge of the water but Nat was almost incessantly begging him to just try to get in the water and he-.
Gethin: Ella. Please.
ELLA: What?
Gethin: I've heard enough stories about him today.
Gethin stands and moves away to create distance. Ella nods. She softly chuckles.
Ella: He told her that she was a "horrendous cunt". That was the end of the story.
Gethin laughs quietly.
Gethin: He was the only one that ever said the things we all thought.
Ella: She didn't even come today.
Gethin: She didn't, did she?
Ella: She really was a "horrendous cunt".
Gethin: Undoubtedly.
Ella stands, closing the space between them. She puts her arm through his and rests her head on his shoulder.
Ella: Gethin?
Gethin: Yes?
Ella: Why did it take something like this for us to see each other again?
Gethin: That's a loaded question.
Ella: I'm serious.
Gethin: I don't know.
(beat)
Time got the better of us?
Ella: Oh, that's a cop-out.
Ella crosses back to the chair in the middle. She takes her hair down. Gethin remains silent.
Ella: Time wasn't it. We can always make time.
Gethin shakes his head. He sits down on the ground and crosses his legs. Rubbing his eyes with one hand, he pulls a small bag of cocaine from his suit pocket with the other. Without looking at it, he sits it on one of his knees and taps it softly with two of his fingers.
Gethin:
(almost a whisper)
It's not always that easy, Ella.
