"Britney Knight please come forward" the crowd showered me with applause. Pride flooded my heart like a tsunami, who would have thought that me, the stereotypical clueless blond would be getting my Bachelor of Law.I hear a voice beckoning me from the other side of the crowd after the ceremony, As I expected it was my mum followed by her entourage that was my family. " congratz sweetie" she called then followed with a very tight hug slowly crushing my ribs. It was all to surreal, me basic small-town Britney was going to move to the city and become a criminal lawyer. I almost zone out of all the congratz and good wishes and start dreaming about all the people that I will help and bad people that I will put away... this is going to be a journey.
Ever since year twelve I have had my eyes set on working at the famous Patton and associates, her and her team have always been there to stand up for the smaller parties and set the world right.
Interview day, my hands are shaking like a leaf on a tree... if that tree was in a cyclone. I've been sat in this office for what feels like forever and counting. The longer time that I spend the greater my anxiety gets." Britney?" A powerful voice called from the front office. Not expecting the fright, I jump first in my seat and then hop to my feet.
We both enter the room together and position ourselves on opposite sides of the desk briefly shaking hands before sitting down. The room is silent so I decide to break the ice with " So you are the real Chloe Patton, I have read every single case of yours since I was in year 12", My instant thought was damn it Britney now you sound Like a crazy fan girl but then she looks up and smiles. "pleased to hear that I have fans" she exclaimed with a humorous grin on her face. I go red raw in the face. The rest of the interview continues as one normally does with generic questions such as 'why do you want to work for this law firm?'. After half an hour of Q+A she dismisses me as a primary school teacher would with a quick we will get back to you and I got up to leave. As I was half way out the door there was a "stop!" I turn around not expecting it and the next words knocked me off my feet "you got the job; I can tell by your eagerness and work ethic that this firm is for you". I was stunned by the immediate response and stood dumb founded, "thank you" I stammer
"I expect to see you bright and early tomorrow, welcome to Patton and associates"
That day on I worked at Patton and associates. For the first two months I had been partnering up with other lawyers as a secondary just so I can get a feel for it, after that I did small civil cases and minor crimes, but the day came along that I was to get my first big case.
We all settled into the board room ready for morning debrief where we all discussed our cases and where our stances were, feedback was given and new directions on cases were provided. Soon after this was finished Chloe declared that there was a new murder case, no one said anything because no one wanted it now, but my hands were free, so I said yes.
MY FIRST CASE! IM SO EXCITED! I read through the case file describing what the case was, and may I just say the severity was high. A 23-year-old female Sarah Park was murdered at 2:30am on the 13th of march while on a ski trip with a friend, death by blood loss due to stab wounds in the back classified as homicide. A series of lab results came with the file and as I was reading I found that the sink of the cabin that she was staying at had traces of Sarah's DNA in it, I found this odd because it said that before the death the cleaners had been around. If her DNA was in the sink it could mean the killer was trying to clean the weapon or get rid of it...
The walk down to the jail where (my client) the accused Bob Martine wasn't far. He was the Ex-boyfriend of the now deceased Sarah. As I am walking, I am picturing a big bulky dude with a cloak of tattoos. But I walk to the front desk of holding and ask if I can speak to Bob Martine, I am guided to the custody suit of a pewny slim framed man. Sat there with a straight face he says nothing.
