Five was contemplating. He knew it wasn't the best idea. He knew if Hargreeves found out, that would be the end of him. But he still had to know. Reginald carried that journal everywhere, in all the trainings, all the missions. If Five wants to know anything, that's what he needed to find.
His mind made-up, he glanced at the red numbers on his alarm clock. 1:45. Reginald has them wake up at 3:15 everyday. Does he chance it? Yes. Once the numbers changed to 2:00, he slipped out of bed.
A slight creeping of the floorboards makes his heart race. Once he's in the hallway, he doesn't want to risk any more eerie wood sounds. He uses his powers and jumps down to the first floor.
His light blue Academy pajamas brush against the center rug as he walks. He paused before the large mahogany door. Afraid to open it, he spatial jumped to the other side. The lights are off, except for the light coming from an old fashioned lamp, the kind that you pull a chain and has a green top. He went straight to the desk and shuffled through the drawers, staying as quiet as possible.
He has no such luck so he moved on to the filing cabinets behind him. What he does find though, brings us to our current story. The beginning of it all.
Five found something he wasn't even looking for. A drawer labeled Investments. He found that Reginald Hargreeves was keeping track of the other 36 special children that he hadn't acquired. Every one of them had a file, complete with addresses, copies of birth certificates, and what he suspected their powers to be.
Only one file said they were in New York. A girl. Her name was Althea. And she lived two blocks away.
For some reason, Five wanted to find her. To see if Hargreeves was right. Did all of the 43 have powers? If so, why was Vanya so ordinary?
At the very least he might make a friend. It's not like any of his siblings liked him. They were intimidated he told himself. That's all it was, he was better and they couldn't stand it. Only Vanya seemed to like him. Sometimes Klaus, when he hadn't broke into the liquor cabinet anyways.
Five decided he was going to find this girl during the Academy's "free time". It's only a couple blocks. But first, he was going to finish reading the file until everyone's alarms went off and he had to scramble to not get caught.
Somehow though, Five thought it was worth it.
And thus begins our story. The story that Five created before he traveled through time. And the one he needs to finish once he comes back.
The story of two best friends. A strict, cranky, scientist who doesn't care about the seven kids he claims to have adopted. And one broken heart needing to be healed.
