The sound of a far off siren finally stirred me into consciousness. I squinted my eyes open, it was still pretty early about five fifteen. The morning rush would start in a minute but I was too cold to move just yet. I shoved my hands in the pockets of my red hoodie and pulled my knees closer to my chest. I must have fallen asleep leaning against the outside of a bus stop last night, although I didn't remember choosing to sleep here. I usually just slept on the emergency stairways of dumpy apartment building or if I was lucky I'd sneak into a mall before it closed and find a place there, but I'd probably been to drunk and tired to find somewhere more.. discrete. I pulled my hood farther over my face as a few people walked by, funny place Star City. Civilians walk by probably about fifty homeless people everyday in their way to work but they only stop if your a kid. Some street rats take advantage of this but I hate the attention and pity I get.
I sighed, my breath making a cloud of smoke in the air. My head was still fuzzy but the alcohol from last night was finally wearing off. I combed a hand through my matted red hair and pulled out my box of cheap cigarettes from my back pocket and light it with the green lighter I'd stolen last week. I closed my eyes leaning my head back against the outside of the bus stop shelter.
"Here you go." The sound of a stranger's voice made me jump, I'd almost fallen back to sleep right before they spoke. I turned my head to look up at them, it was a couple, a man and a woman. They definitely went from around here, their clothes were nice, the man had a casual business suit and the woman was wearing a pencil skirt and blouse. The man was holding out a ten dollar bill and smiling at me. I looked at them for a minute, taking my cigarette out of my mouth and holding it between my index and middle finger, before shaking my head and chuckling to myself.
"Keep it." I said waving my hand at him.
"Oh my god Kenny he's just a kid." The woman said to her partner, tugging on his elbow.
"I'm right here you know." I said rolling my eyes sticking my cigarette in my mouth again, breathing the smoke towards them. They were definitely from out of town if they've never seen a kid on the streets before.
"Stay there I'm calling child services, ok? There going to give you a place to stay off the streets." The woman said pulling out her phone. I groaned. Just what I needed, child service up my ass again. Those guys really don't give up.
"I'd really prefer if you didn't do that." The man crouched down beside me, he had neatly combed brown hair and green eyes, his face was average looking but he had a big nose.
"Do you have any parents buddy?"
"Yeah they work at Queen fucking Consolidated. No obviously I don't have any parents and if I did they wouldn't give a shit about me. No one does, so why don't you just go back to your little mansion and continue pretending you give a shit about people like me."
"Look I know you're probably scared but we're going to help you."
"Bullshit. I'm done with this. See ya." I grabbed my backpack and jumped to my feet, not glancing back at the two rich pricks.
"Wait come back!" I heard the man's voice call out behind me, I glanced back and saw him running towards me. 'Shit now Barbie and Ken are on my case.' I bolted. The guy was fast but he didn't know the streets and alleyways like I did. I managed to give him the slip in the alleyway behind Jefferson's Pizzaria, there was a wooden fence between the side of the store and the next building and the owner always threw the trash bins next to the fence. I jumped the fence and ran up the next building fire escape stairs onto the rooftop. The perfect getaway. Before I disappeared I looked back at the guy, he was looking around and saying things like 'You don't have to run we're just trying to help.' He finally looked up and saw me. I saw it in his eyes, he pitied me, he gave one last, pathetic attempt to get me to come down.
"Please come down, I promise I will do everything I can to help you. You'll be able to eat when you want to, to feel safe when you sleep, to have people who care about you."
"That sounds nice, if only there was someone who stuck around long enough to give me that shit." I flipped him off and walked away.
