there she was, sitting two rows in front of her. even though she was facing the other way, veronica could imagine the way she looked.
beautiful.
red hair, flowing down to her waist.
brown eyes, which usually veronica never payed attention to, but suddenly when she looked at cheryl they seemed to have a purpose. just there to add to every other little perfect thing about her.
her lipstick,,, that red lipstick she always wore. veronica swooned, imagining kissing her, tasting it.
she melted, thinking about sneaking up on cheryl one day, playing guess who for a second but of course she knew who it was. she imagined a picture of her and cheryl holding hands, and for a second, veronica almost believed that the scenes playing out in her head were the reality. she almost did, that was until she saw cheryl give chuck clayton a kiss on his cheek. oh right. him. veronica had forgotten he was a part of cheryl's life too. that picture of her and cheryl holding hands became a picture of her standing beside chuck and cheryl holding hands.
veronica shook her head to get rid of it. focus on your homework. she thought. picking up a pencil and pressing it to the paper. she started writing, forcing herself not to overreact, angrily making words form around the page, answering math problems incorrectly. 24, 77, 81, 13... it didn't matter if they were wrong, veronica could just rewrite them at home. this wasn't about getting them right, this was about not focusing on cheryl and her... terrible boyfriend. he doesn't deserve her, she thought. 14, 65, 90, 7... he's just a self absorbed jerk. 38, 41... how can she even stand him? she thought.
then for one second, just a tiny moment, out of the corner of her eye, she saw chuck put his hands on cheryl's waist. veronica's pencil streaked across the page. she put up her hand and asked to go to the office, because she wasn't feeling well. when her teacher approved she practically sprinted out of the classroom.
she didn't even go to the office, she just ran home, still reciting random numbers in her head. 22, 67, 72... she threw herself on her bed. her safe space. she searched underneath her bed for her little stuffed bear she still kept from when she was a child. she hugged it, and cried. how was she so alone? nobody knew about cheryl. nobody understood... she was alone... why did it have to be cheryl? why couldn't she love anyone else? like moose, or trevor, or archie... suddenly, her phone chimed.
archie: hey babe, just wondering if you're okay. i saw you leave math early for some reason and you seemed a bit out of it
veronica: i'm fine baby don't worry about me, i think i just got food poisoning or something
archie: hope you feel better. i'll come over after school to take care of you like a good boyfriend
veronica: that's alright i think i'm fine
archie: don't be silly. i'm coming k?
veronica: okay, fine
archie: okay then. i love you
veronica: yeah, love you.
then she flung her phone across her bed.

concept: veronica has a secret crush on cheryl and gets really jealous of her and her boyfriend, chuck, but nobody can tell because veronica's already dating a boy named archie, and she hasn't come out as a lesbian yet.
