Traffic. I hate it. What part of me thought it was a good idea to move to a big city?
I kept blinking in and out of reality. One second I was talking to Mavis in the coffee shop; the next, I was here in this traffic jam. It was helpful to some extent because it made me forget I was stuck here but that only made it that much worse when I came back and realized I had been sitting here for two hours. After trying in vain to get back to that happy place in my head with Mavis, I turned on the radio for a bit but nothing good was on. I sighed as I turned off the radio and leaned back in my seat, closing my eyes.
My silence was suddenly disturbed by the sound of the passenger-side door opening. I looked over to see a girl with a pink bob taking deep breaths as if to calm herself. Her eyes were squeezed shut but I could tell they were moving behind their lids.
"E-excuse me b-but i-is th-th is this car—shaking?" She took a large gulp mid-sentence then turned her head towards me.
Her eyes popped open and I could barely see the pupils as they bounced in every direction like black and green balls being shot out from under the skin. Her hands were suddenly at her face, trying to claw away the flesh. Her mouth dropped open, releasing shrieks of terror and pleas for help. I tried shaking her, tried to calm her down by speaking to her in the calmest tone I could muster, but she wouldn't stop. She couldn't stop.
Her eyes closed again and her hands dropped to her lap. The screams stopped and for a moment I thought she had died, but then I realized I could still hear her gasping for air.
I let out a sigh of relief and looked back towards the road, now aware of the sound of honking horns surrounding me. The cars in front of me had finally moved. The sooner I could get out of here, the sooner I could get this new stranger to a hospital.
The cars stopped again. This time it was because of a red light, a problem that would resolve itself much quicker than the car crash that had come before it. I heard a small whimper and looked over to see the girl's porcelain skin now being stained by trails of blood. At first I assumed it was all coming from the scratches she had made on herself with her nails, but I quickly realized the blood was in fact tears pooling out of her once again open eyes. The eyes were no longer shaking, nor were they green like before, instead the were completely white and yet I could still since they were staring at me.
I felt a scream tearing rising out of my throat, but couldn't hear it as everything went black.
When my eyes opened again i knew I wasn't in my car anymore but other than that it was too dark for me to identify my surroundings. I was pretty sure my arms were above my head and I had the faintest feeling of something cold on my wrists. Was I chained up? I felt a warm breeze on my neck, or was it someone's breath?
A voice in my left ear quickly answered my question, "You saw something you weren't supposed to, and if you ever want to leave I'm going to have to ask you to forget it. Can you do that for me, Mark?"
"W-who a-are you? And what d-d-what do y-ou want wi-with m-me?" I found myself stuttering in a way I hadn't in years.
"You don't recognize me Bunny? I thought you were my best friend?"
The voice only rose an octave higher than it was before but that was enough for everything to click in my head,"M-M-M"
"Mavis" she whispered, helping me finish the name like she used to when we first met.
She made a sound that resembled a pout, only she drew it out in such a way that I knew meant she was mocking me," It's really a shame Bunny. I wanted so badly for you to agree to forget so I could let you go, but now that you know who I am.. well I'm afraid that offer is off the table." she giggled, "Since you're so cute I can bend the rules a little. If you're good and remain silent for the rest of the night I won't kill, I'll just erase you memory and give you a new life, hows that sound?"
She patted me on the head and suddenly my lips felt as if they were sewn shut, even if I tried to scream my absolute loudest I knew no sound would come out. I felt her body move away from mine and heard the click of a door behind me. With a silent sigh of relief I finally allowed the tears to slip down my cheeks. She was finally back, but not at all how I remembered her.
