I woke up to flashing white lights and muffled voices.

My head was throbbing.

My heart was pounding.

Ba-bump. Ba-bump.

He's breathing. He woke up.

Shit, that was one hell of a job!

How tense!

"Guys! Be quiet! He's probably overwhelmed!"

I blinked a few times. These voices were swarming around me, the thoughts and dialogues of so many people... why were there so many?

Ba-bump. Ba-bump.

Why hasn't he said anything?

What? I've had plenty of thoughts. Why couldn't they hear them?

Ba-bump. Ba-bump.

Is he okay?

Yes! I'm fine! I tried calling out but my voice was too weak. I wasn't heard over the roar of others' thoughts.

Ba-bump. Ba-bump.

Ba-bump. Ba-bump.

Ba-bump. Ba-bump.

Ba-bump. Ba-bump.

Everything went quiet.

Ba-bump.

Is he okay? Whispers floated around the room. He hasn't said anything at all.

Ba-bump.

HELP! I screamed in my head.

Ba-bump.

They all stared blankly.

I was the only one.

Twenty hundred years ago the government perfected a drug they had been working on. It silenced the voice in people's head so anything they think is voiced out loud. Every single person is dosed with the drug at birth and its effects are... were... permanent for every single person worldwide. Except for me.

When I got into a car crash, I was injured so badly that I spent months in a coma. Now that I'm recovered, though, I have a dangerous secret.

I am the only person alive whose thoughts are private, and the government wants me in their lab. So I'm on the run.

Wish me luck.
