There Was a Time

There was a time when I swear your name floated on every heavy sigh escaping my anxious lips. There was a time when the world would stop when you spoke my name. It didn't matter that my heart supposedly belonged to another. It only mattered that your smile would make my day better. And your laugh would lighten my heart. It was never about what was right and what was wrong. It was always about you. It was always about who I became when I thought of you. And who I wanted to be because of you. Change is never something that people are easy to embrace. But I would have gladly changed the stars for you if only you would have asked. You represented so much more to me than love. You represented excitement and intrigue and most of all, beauty. Not just outside either, although your beauty outshone even the most lovely women. It had so much more to do with what you allowed my heart to do. I had never loved before you. And I am unsure if I will ever have that kind of love again. I am not sure that you were ever mine, though I like to think so. It is sweet of you to allow me to think so. Times have changed so much. So many things are different, so many things are more difficult. And still my pulse quickens at the thought of you. And still my heart hurts for the loss. Love is not something you forget. It is something you carry with you always. And ours was the purest kind of love. No expectations or judgments. I will mourne its loss until my dying breath.
