The great rush of battle and the hooves of more than a million horses, elephants, foot soldiers and chariots rumbling along the earth is one of the greatest sounds imaginable. Add to that blood- thirstly yells, screaming men, threatening princes and most of all, the explosion of divine weapons- that could probably explain 1/10th of the battle. The main thing about the battle was the emotions running around. Aanger, pity, hatred, love, lust, ignorance, confusion, jealousy, bitterness... In midst of that, stood two men. Their hearts of fire and their maces of irons, forged from the fire of their deep hatred for each other shone like beacons of light. Their harsh words, reserved for each other and the clash of maces that even the gods feared was a fearsome sight to behold.

But why? Why did this fearsome battle develop? Why were cousins killing cousins, grandchildren killing their grandfathers and students killing their teachers?

The answer is the story of Mahabharata. But we must not mistakenly think that this story is about the war. It talks about the events leading to the war and the good and bad about it. Mahabharata is about the characters and their desires and their life. It shows how man lives and how he should live. It also shows how one man's pride and greed has the power to destroy a kingdom.
