Hello everyone!
I sincerely apologize, but since I have two major exams tomorrow and edits still aren't done the new chapter will not be posted this week. Instead, here are some fun facts about the things you've read so far!
Swords
So far the main sword you've seen described is a longsword, and I am very excited to share different weapons later on.
The long sword is divided into two parts: the hilt (comprised of the grip, the guard/cross, and the pommel) and the blade.
The ideal sword should have a double-edge (I've given Tamen only one, 'cause dabs), should have a grip long enough for two hands, yet should hold the capability of being maneuvered with one.
The blade has a strong and weak end. The names don't mean one is physically weaker than the other. They're only named as such because the strong end has more leverage against another sword when fighting, while the weaker end can be easily deflected.
Fighting
Footing:
As you will hopefully read Tamen do, footing varies based on action. But the general stance is started with your feet roughly shoulder-width apart. Your leading foot should be a step forward, and the back foot should be pivoted. This positioning provides balance for both forward and backward motions when moving quickly and side to side. For fluidity, the knees must be bent, and your weight centered. Lastly, you must always stay relaxed.
More often than not beginners tense their shoulders when holding a sword, this leads to choppy motions, slow reactions.
The oberhau:
The oberhau translates to a strike from above. It's a standard move in sword fighting, and Tamen tends to bring it up quite often whether by name or description. As the name states, the sword is brought down on the opponent in a swing from above.
I hope this helps clarify things for anyone who doesn't know much about sword fights.
The Thrust:
When performing this movement, extend the sword's tip in a straight line (it isn't going to be perfect) aiming at the target. If you need to close more distance, follow with a step of the lead foot.
These are the main things I can remember my boys doing/saying without rereading the scene. Most of my knowledge of longsword fighting comes from German fighting, Kunst des Fechtens, and styles which Vikings used. I'm not an expert but I try my best, so if you ever have questions or want to share fun facts please feel free to comment.
If you guys would like to see more of these when I can't post a chapter, please let me know! Other than that, I have updated my other stories this week, so feel free to check out Stay In The Dark and Cocoa Under the Sky.
