"I thought you were bringing me home," I said, trying to disguise my letdown as we pulled into T&M's lot. Happy maneuvered the tow truck around in a half circle just past the garage doors so that my Charger ended up parked right in front.
He opened his door and smiled at me. "I ain't goin' back on my word, baby girl. We just can't have the tow truck with your car attached to it parked in front of your apartment building. Someone will see it..."
"...and word will get back to Chibs," I nodded, finally understanding.
Happy winked as he jumped out. "Smart kid," I heard him chuckle as he walked around the truck.
Once my car was off the chains and he had parked the truck across the lot, Happy took my hand and lead me to his bike. He pulled a helmet out of the compartment for me and placed it on my head, securing the straps. He was all business at that moment, serious about making sure the straps were tight enough around my chin to keep the helmet straight.
"You seem to enjoy strapping me into things," I joked, remembering how he had fastened the seat belt in the truck for me not 20 minutes before.
"For now, just to keep you safe," he replied, giving me a blank stare. Then, breaking out into a mischievous grin which I had never seen on his face before, he added, "Later, maybe for fun."
I had ridden on the back of a bike many times in the three years I had been living in Charming. With Chibs mainly, but also a few times with Juice or Tig when my car was being worked on and I needed a ride to home or work. Happy got on the bike first and offered his hand to help me.
"You've ridden before, right," he quizzed me.
"Sure. Plenty of times. Once when Juice was giving me a ride home, we stopped at the old abandoned Food Mart and he tried to teach me how to ride by myself in their lot," I laughed, remembering what a disaster that was.
Happy's jaw clenched and his eyes tightened. "Yeah well, that won't be happening again. Ever. From here on out, the only bikes you'll be riding bitch on will be mine and Chibs."
My first instinct was to tell Happy to go fuck himself. But instead of letting myself be angered by his ultimatum, I recognized the jealousy behind his words. This was a new emotion I was seeing in him, and I was warmed by it.
"OK, Killa," I said taking his hand. I threw my leg over the bike and wrapped my arms around his waist. "As long as you promise me I'll be the only bitch on the back of your bike."
"I think I can arrange that," he nodded as he started the engine.
It was a quick ride back to my apartment. It was obvious when he parked the bike a half a block away from my building when there were ample parking spots closer to my door that he still was worried about being discovered.
I stood in front of him, taking off my helmet, and I rolled my eyes as I handed it to him.
Happy shrugged it off like there was nothing he could do. "I know, I know. Just give me time to figure this all out, ok?"
I knew he was referring to Chibs, and letting him and the others know that there was something between Happy and I. Maybe I was jumping the gun here, but I felt as if now was the right time to speak my mind – before we walked into my apartment and I let his perfect body and soft lips cloud my judgment
"I want you to come home with me as much as I think you want to be there. But I gotta tell ya, I'm not crazy about the fact that you're giving me ultimatums about not riding with anyone else but yet you're afraid someone will find out you're here."
