In January 1960, Senator John F. Kennedy announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States. He successfully got it on the first ballot, unlike many others. When asked if she thought he would get it on the first ballot, Jackie replied:
"I hoped he would but I didn't know".
Mr Kennedy began travelling all around the country and Jackie often accompanied him.
During the campaign, she learned that she was pregnant and her doctors instructed her to remain at home. From there, she answered hundreds of campaign letters, letters from politicians to members of the public she hadn't even met.
She also taped TV commercials, even broadcasting one in Spanish; using her linguistic skills.
She gave and accepted interviews, for example recording one with Dr Benjamin Spock on how JFK could be elected President. She even wrote a weekly newspaper column, named Campaign Wife, which was distributed across the country.
On November 9th, 1960, John F. Kennedy beat Republican Richard M. Nixon in a very close race. Two and-a-half weeks later, in the early hours of Thanksgiving, Mrs. Kennedy gave birth to their second child, John Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr.
