To say that I'm uncomfortable would be the understatement of the century. The air around Steve and Peggy is so tense you could cut it with a battle ax. Almost everyone had quickly made excuses and left the room, probably to avoid a possible blowout.

"I'll cut to the chase, we have been gathering intel on Hydra for the past two years. Most of it is circumstantial at best, we need something to tie everything together. We also know about the problems you've been having with them. So, we're here with a proposal for us to work together to make sure these scumbags never see the light of day again," Fury says, he's clearly not someone who likes beating around the bush.

"How?" Steve asks, his posture rigid as he sits between me and Bucky, both of us rubbing small, soothing circles into his back.

"We need someone to go in undercover and get Pierce to admit to his crimes, and if possible, divulge what his goals are. We would use one of our agents, but seeing as how they seem to have a fascination with y/n, we thought it might be best to ask her," Peggy explains.

"Absolutely not," Steve snarls, his hands clenching into fists.

"Steve, please, if there was any other way we would do it, but this is the only chance we have." Peggy pleads, leaning forward in her seat.

"The answer is no, and that's final," Steve says at the same moment that I speak up.

"What do you want me to do?"

Peggy turns to look at me. "We'll set up a meeting with Pierce, you'll be wearing a wire, get him to confess, and we'll apprehend him before he can even blink," she explained.

"You cannot seriously be thinking about this, y/n. This is insane. You're risking your life for a plan that has the potential to backfire horrendously. Please reconsider sweetheart," Steve pleads, holding my hands in his own and looking at me with desperation in his eyes.

"Steve," I say gently, hoping to convey my emotions with my voice and eyes, "I want to help get rid of these bastards just as much as you do, and if this is the only way I can help, then I'm going to do it."

"Fine! Do whatever you want! It's not like you're ripping my heart out and stomping on it by going through with this!" Steve yells as he rips his hands away from mine and storms from the room.

I turn to Bucky, the tears already building in my eyes. "Buck, I-" I'm cut off by Bucky pulling me into his arms, gently kissing my hair and shushing me.

"Shh doll, I know. I don't like this plan, but I support your decision sweetheart. Let me go talk to Steve, get him to calm down," Bucky says softly before standing and heading in the direction Steve had gone.

"Well, as fun as this has been, I need to start coordinating for the mission. So if you ladies will excuse me, I'll see myself out," Fury says as he gets to his feet and makes for the front door.I make to get up as well but Peggy's voice brings stops me. "Y/N, may I please speak with you for a moment? It's important..." She is drumming her fingers on her thigh and looks rather pensive so I relax back into the couch, motioning for her to continue.

"Four years ago, Steve and I were dating. Then I got the opportunity to work as an agent for the FBI, in DC. I loved Steve dearly, but I knew that this was my once in a lifetime chance. So I packed my bags and left. I know I broke his heart by leaving, but I also knew that he deserves someone who loves him more than anything else. What I'm trying to say is; I'm glad he has you, y/n. Seeing him now, with you and James, I know I made the right decision. So, thank you. Thank you for giving him what I never could," she says, giving me a soft, sad smile.

"Peggy, I can see that you still care deeply about him, even though you aren't together. So, I promise you now, I'll take good care of his heart, always," I reach out to give her hand a soft squeeze, reiterating my sentiments as I smile.

"That is all I ask," she nods.

Even though this is the woman who broke Steve's heart, I can tell that she still loves him and wants the best for him. I see so many similarities between her and I that I cannot help thinking that once this mess is over she and I could become friends.

"Well, I really must get going now. Thank you for the lovely chat darling. I guess I'll see you as soon as all the planning is in place," Peggy says, shaking off her emotions as she gets up to leave. "Please say goodbye to Steve for me, I doubt he would want to see me right now," she says with one last smile before she walks out the door.

Turning my back on the door, I go to search out my boys. I need to talk to Steve, I just hope that I can get him to listen.
