“Mommy, what was I like when I was a baby?” The little girl asked her mother as she tucked her into bed.
“Do you want that as your bedtime story?” The Mother asked her daughter.
“Yes please!” The little girl exclaimed with a grin on her face.
“Well,” the mother began. “I already told you how your Daddy and I met. Your Dad and I have always wanted kids, even since we were kids ourselves. So we were beyond happy when we found out that we were going to have a baby. We didn't even know if it was going to be a boy or a girl yet but we would've been overjoyed to have either.”
“But I turned out to be a girl!” The daughter chimed in.
“Yes you did Princess,” The mother said with a smile.
“Anyways, we told our friends and family one night at dinner when we brought them all over. I'm honestly surprised that your Dad didn't spill it before then. When we told them they were all super happy and all of your aunts immediately started touching my belly. My sister said she just thought I was getting fat.” The mother chuckled.
“So I was growing inside your belly Mommy?”
“Yep, that's where all babies come from.”
“How did I get in there?” The little girl asked.
“Uhh, maybe ask your Daddy about that sometime, but not now.” The mother said, her face turning a little bit pink.
“So after a few months we went to the doctor to find out whether you were a boy or girl. The doctor put this cold jelly stuff on my belly and then used a tool to see inside my stomach. We were so happy when we found out that we were going to have a little girl. When I was about 6 months pregnant we had the baby shower. All of my girlfriends and your aunts came. We played games and they gave me some things for you. Shortly after your Dad and I started putting together your nursery. The walls were painted gray with pink and gold dots.” The mother said, running her hand along the gray wall.
“I remember the first time I felt you kick inside my belly. I was so excited that I ran, well, waddled down the stairs where your Dad and his friends were to tell them. They all wanted to feel and were amazed. It wasn't so amazing when you started to kick me in my ribs but that's ok. Soon enough I started to go into labor with you. I remember I was sitting on the couch with your Dad watching a movie and my water broke. I honestly thought that I peed my pants because that had been happening a lot lately.”
“Ew Mom that's yucky!” The girl exclaimed, scrunching her nose.
“It's true though! But anyways, when I told your Daddy he just kind of looked at me and started freaking out. He was probably just nervous and excited but I was just trying to get up from the couch. We got to the hospital and were given a room. It took a few hours and it hurt a lot, but all the pain went away when I saw your face. You were the most beautiful thing I had ever seen and I was so happy. Your Dad was standing beside me with his mouth wide open in amazement. It was adorable when he held you for the first time. He was so happy and I was just taking in the sight of my two babies. A few days after we got to take you home with us. Our little family. The first few nights were rough, we had to learn how to take care of a baby for the first time. You slept in our room for the first few weeks but eventually started sleeping in your own room. Eventually you started growing teeth, crawling, talking, and then walking. I remember when you said your first word, it was on your 2nd birthday and you screamed “BIRTHDAY” with cake all over your face. It was very cute. Your first steps actually happened a few months after your first words. You were standing up, with your arms out. Trying to make your way over to Daddy while he was sat on the floor with his arms out to you. You fell a few times but eventually you got the hang of it and made your way into his arms. We were all so happy, I remember your Dad couldn't wait to tell his brothers. I'm pretty sure he rubbed it in their faces a little bit too.” The mother laughed to herself, realizing that her daughter had fallen asleep.
“I love you baby.” She said to her little girl.
There was a soft knock at the door and she looked over to see her husband standing in the doorway.
“Are my two angels having a slumber party without me?” He grinned, walking over to place a kiss on his wife's lips.
“I was just telling her a story but she fell asleep.” The wife said, looking over at her sleeping child.
“Maybe we should get some sleep too, come on let's go to bed love.” He said, placing a ginger peck on his daughters sleeping face before taking his wife's hand.
