*Prologue*
“That one! Him right there standing straight in the middle of the drum line all the way in the back” Morgan whispered to me. “He’s best friends with my brother. Isn’t he just beautiful?” my eyes scanned the drummers furiously trying to find the boy she was describing.
“Morgan! I seriously can’t tell which one he is!”
“Oh my goodness, just look!” she grabbed my head with her hands and pointed me in his direction. “He’s the tall one right in the middle! Come on Kat, can you really not see him?”
My eyes were frantically scrutinizing the boys standing towards the back of the stage all with different percussive instruments at our school’s winter band performance. “Morgan, I seriously can’t-” but then I spotted him.
From my view at the back of the auditorium, he seemed perfect. He was the tallest guy of all the drummers; probably of the entire band. He was very tan from my view, with what looked like soft, black hair. He was wearing the band’s uniform of the black suit just like the rest of the boys. All in all, he seemed perfect. But what would I know? I’m sitting dozens of yards away from him in the back of the packed auditorium.
“So…what do you say?” Morgan poked me.
“Huh? Say about what?” I responded to her, not tearing my eyes away from the beautiful boy that my friend has the pleasure of knowing.
“Doesn’t he look like the Prince?”
“What Prince?”
“The guy! You know, the Prince from The Little Mermaid?”
“Prince Eric?” I finally turned to face her.
“Yeah, him! Prince Eric. That’s where he gets his nickname, did you know that?”
“Morgan, what are you talking about?
She sighed and flopped dramatically back into her seat, clearly annoyed with my ignoring her. “Kat, my dear, he’s called Prince Eric for a reason. His name is Eric. And he looks just like the guy from The Little Mermaid, hence, he’s called Prince Eric.”
“Prince Eric” I tried the nickname for myself. “Prince Eric” I repeated it. “I like it. It suits him”
I turned forward in my seat again and kept my eyes glued on him as the band finished their last song. As I stood up to join the crowd in a standing ovation, I could only think of one thing.
That boy is going to be mine.
