It happened at a gas station when I was seven. My dad was already out of the car filling up the tank while my two older brothers were staring blindly at their phone screens, looking at heaven only knows. I was still in a booster seat due to my height that my mother constantly told me wouldn’t be an issue, as soon as I had this thing called a growth spurt; which in my 7 year old mind sounded like a distasteful vegetable I would have to eat. Back to the point though, another car pulled up pressing on their breaks abruptly, that grabbed both my brothers and my own attention. Curious as can be we continued to watch as a man stepped out of the door, slamming it behind him hurrying into the little convenience store.
Now, my father had noticed the car pull up too, thought nothing of it until the man stepped out of the car. A panicked looks was now stained on my father’s face as he searched his pockets for his wallet- no his keys. Which happened to be on top of counsel. But, my father was too late. His sons had already exited the car rushing over to the other vehicle. They both became these possessed creatures trying to break into the car. Grabbing whatever they could get their hands on to break a window to unlock the car door from inside.
After that, the man had already was coming out of the store with bags in hand, as soon as he saw my brothers opening the door to the car. He became livid, racing over to yell at them, but later I would realize that was not his intent. By then my father stepped in, not to apologize for his son's actions but to join in. To finish off what my brother’s started. Killing the man and his wife and daughter that looked to be my age in the car. I witnessed first hand, my dad and brothers kill people we didn’t even know.
They weren’t human though.
This is the work of KG. Killing Gene. A gene that is inherited, not spread like a virus. It’s purpose is to protect or (that’s what the KG committee tells us) from those “unpredictable” forces out there. Those forces being the supernatural. It gives us the strength to single handedly take down an Alpha (not alone of course) or be as swift as a vampire. It gives us the power to kill basically. And I, Amelia Kent, have this gene too. Along with my best friend Paxton Nile. However, this gene isn’t a blessing, but a curse. Every time I’m around those creatures, I become antsy and violent. My senses trying to clue in on the target to be exterminated. I become my own kind of monster. And if you have it, you will too.
I'm still human though, my hunger is sated by the primary food groups except sweets. I absolutely hate sweets. They make my teeth feel like they are being chipped away by a chisel. Plus sugar isn't enough to help substance my endurance; it's cheap limited energy; when I need more than that to take down a beast with sharp teeth. And I do get to sleep during the night, the only time I don't get to is when I have to hunt those creatures of the night. I’m just like any human when it comes to complaining and blaming others for my own mistakes, it’s my DNA that’s different is all. And the fact that everyone like me has a special tattoo engraved on our chest of a blade to symbolize “warrior”. But, in all truth it meant killer. I was a killer, killing monsters to protect the human that don’t have KG.
------
My father was probably the most glad to know I inherited KG when I became nine. That meant all his precious offsprings would be apart of the cause to protect the humans and exterminate the supernatural kind altogether. The numbers of KG was still at a minimum ,but I imagine there was a major pressures for all women with KG to reproduce offsprings and scientist were probably well on their way to trying create a substance that would give the humans without KG, the killing gene. My two older brothers, on the other hand, seem displeased. Now they would have to watch their younger sister’s back out on the field as if they already didn’t have to worry about their own backs.
