I know there is a good number of these here. I see a lot of ignorance, and a lot of hatred in stories like this. I'm torn on whether to open with a quote, or a statement on Atheism on a broad basis. These are literally being typed as they come to mind, so I apologize for anything sub-par to my already horrid writing. I think I'll begin with a little musing, and my thoughts on organized religion in this little journal.
For an opening statement, Atheism isn't a faith. It's the lack of one, and the belief in those laws that can be proven. We don't believe humans are made from spit and dirt, much less a rib. We believe that Humans and modern apes had a common ancestor. Why do we think this? Because there's a huge amount of evidence towards this, and none that's logical enough to affect it against it. I hear the jeer "Evolution is just a Theory" a lot. I live in a small-minded area. So my point here is, Gravity is a theory. A scientific theory (Commonly accepted as fact, anyway.) is simply the best answer, that's true, and when a better one comes along, we change it. I like to have proof. Faith is belief without evidence. I intend to have evidence. I in no way intend to bash religion, however it may happen. Again, these are the thoughts I'm having at the moment, not a thought-out journal. Some days I may be a little more irritated than others. Anyway, lets begin this little tirade with one of my favorite quotes, from Epicurus: "Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Than he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Than he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? And if he is neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?" This is a good one to think about, for starters. The Christian God, anyway (The only one I intend to rant on, because I'm not bothered by other religions. And before you think of the whole 9/11 argument, saying all Muslims are terrorists is like saying all Christians are Hitler.) Is, if he exists, malevolent. He attempts to be potrayed as a loving diety, but it doesn't work. First of all, let me reference you to Genesis, the book of the bible in which Adam and Eve is recorded. God slaps a man made from Dirt and spit onto this supposed Garden of Eden, (Sometimes the materials are dust and clay, and the catalyst is sometimes breath.) He supplies Adam and Eve a bounty of food, but sets a single tree (The tree of Knowlege of Good and Evil, or sometimes simply the Tree of Knowlege) in the center, then tells them not to eat th fruit it bears. If we go with the idea that it's the tree of knowlege of good and evil, then all humanity really has is curiosity, a trait that this all-seeing God, who would know exactly what would happen when he created the tree, designed into us. Without eating from this tree, we would have no clue that eating from it would be wrong. Going with the alternate idea, that it's simply the tree of knowlege, Then we face the first of many, many contradictions in this 'good book'. However, that's a story for another day, and I'll write maybe a series of Cinemasin-esque "Everything wrong with" stories. I realize I've gone off on a tangent, and that isn't good for anyone. Anyway, the only reason Religion was ever in existance is the basic human need for something to rely on, and this is universal. If Iron-age humans, with modern technology were to form an unbiased country, it would inevitably be secular, so long as they had their basic human needs fulfilled.
