Letter One

Dear Will,

I love you.

But you already knew that, didn’t you?

I fell in love with you the moment I saw you. I can still remember that cool, September morning, like it was yesterday. It happened fast and I didn't know it was love at the time. It wasn't because of your green eyes or your dark hair. It wasn't because of the way you would smile at me, like you knew everything about me. It also wasn't because I liked the way you said my name or whispered in my ear.

It was because the first time I saw you, you were helping Edith, the blind girl in our school, pick up her fallen books. I saw you then, because helping Edith is what I always do, but that day you reached her first. I watched you carry her books and lead her to her class. I saw as you smiled at something she said and I knew it was a real smile the moment your lips curved upwards.

But you didn't see me. Not that day and not the next either.

For one week, I wondered how it would feel to hold your hand. I stared at my hands for the longest time, trying to imagine how your hand would fit with mine. I pictured our hands like the last two puzzle pieces needed to create the larger picture.

I stared at myself in the mirror and imagined you standing beside me. Smiling at me the way you did Edith. But I imagined your eyes differently. I imagined them filled with love. Filled with love for me.

Yours truly,

Anna
