By half past noon, I was sitting quietly at the back of the coffee shop, my eyes locked on the table top.
It'd only been about 20 minutes since I'd gotten the IVs plugged out of me, and my head had developed a massive headache.
When I peered up at the clock in the corner and saw that it was almost fifteen minutes until one, my feet began to fidget, my hands trembling.
Would he stand me up like this? I wondered as I sat back in my seat, placing my hands in my lap. I stared at the murky cup of java on the table, watching the cream sliver around on the dark surface.
A hand dropped on my shoulder and I flinched, almost jumping out of my seat.
A burly man with warm green eyes gazed at me curiously. "Are you Ariella, by any chance?" His voice was gentle, like he was speaking to a cornered animal. Though with how wide my eyes had gone from his touch, I could only imagine how petrified I must have looked.
"Yes," I nodded, my own voice small.
He then smiled. "Come with me, Miss. I've got someone that wants to see you."
It wasn't really a smart thing.
Going upstairs to the top of the shop with a complete stranger. But someone wanted to see me. And little did that someone know that I was dying to see them too. As we stepped up the stairs, reaching a closed wooden door, my heart began to pound in my chest.
"She's here." The man beckoned with a knock on the wood.
The door was then swung open, revealing a smiling blond, intense blue eyes locking with mine. "You actually came." Suddenly mustering me up in his arms, he buried his head into my neck.
I remained frozen, my arms stuck to my sides.
It was him.
N.
And as much as I wanted to wrap my arms back around him and thank him for saving me, I couldn't move.
As he pulled away, holding me at an arm's-distance, his smile never faded. "Wow, you look even more beautiful when you're clean." Keeping an arm gently on my forearm, he brought me into the room with him.
"Real sorry about last night," I chuckled awkwardly as I took a seat in front of him at the little table. "I didn't know Starbucks had a top floor."
He shrugged, taking a sip from his coffee cup. "They normally don't. It's just a special one they have here in London for celebrities that want to drink their coffee without having screaming fans surrounding them."
My eyes widened as he then smiled at me, his mouthful of braces adorable. "Celebrities?" I whispered, my brows creasing.
Running a hand through his blond hair, he leaned over the table, eyes locked with mine. "I don't really consider myself much of one, but I'm Niall Horan."
And that's when the puzzle pieces clicked together. "From One Direction?" The air was pushed out of my chest like I'd just been punched.
"You know the band?" He chuckled, his light brows shooting up.
Hell, who didn't know the band?
"I'm not much of a fan or anything." Biting my lip, I glanced around cautiously. It was just the two of us but I grew frightened. He was a celebrity, which meant the paps weren't far behind. "But what are you doing here?"
He blinked, pressing his lips together. "What do you mean, Ariella? I wanted to see you again."
Shaking my head, I rose to my feet. "You can't be seen with a girl like me, Niall. Definitely not a girl like me."
As I stepped towards the door, Niall reached out, his hand coming around my wrist and gently tugging me back. "Ariella, what are you so worried about?"
"Your reputation," I grimaced, staring at the ground. "I'm nothing but a fucked-up girl you saved last night from almost committing suicide. If anyone found that out... You'd be done for."
He sighed softly, his other hand stroking my arm slowly. "No one tells me who I can and can't be friends with, Ari."
"Niall, I'm fucked." When he frowned, I took a step back, shaking my head. "Don't give me that look. I know how bad things are in my life for me now. And I don't want you to be a part of it."
His blue eyes narrowed and he placed his hands on my shoulders. "Ariella, I saved you. I just... I feel like I have to, I must protect you." I blinked at his words. Never before had anyone said such things to me. Hell, people rarely spoke to me. "There's just something about you, Ari. I have to be your friend. Whether you like it or not."
But I did like it.
I wanted nothing better than to become best friends with none other than Niall Horan.
But instead, I shook my head. "Niall, I just can't---"
And then he wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me into him again. "Don't, alright? I saw how you looked yesterday. Like the world was just trying to crush you and you completely succumbed to the heavy burden." Pressing my lips together, I slowly rested my head on his shoulder. "I don't want you to ever feel like that again, Ariella. I know you think I'll only ruin myself by being your friend. But that's most definitely not the case." His voice was soothing in my ear and my previous hitched breathing returned to normal. "I want nothing more than to help you. Through everything."
Releasing him, I peered up into those bright blue eyes. "You have to make me a promise though."
Laughing, he stepped away with a nod. "Anything."
"We'll be friends." When he smiled, I lifted up my finger. "But in secret."
He blinked, tilting his head slightly. "Why secret---"
"Do you want to be friends or not?" I snapped, arching my brow.
With a shrug, Niall chuckled again, holding out his hand. "Deal."
Taking his hand firmly, I grinned back at him. "Alright, deal---"
Coiling an arm around my waist, he dragged me back into his chest, tucking a strand of red hair behind my ear. "I've also got a condition for you, Ariella." He whispered with a sly smirk.
Blinking, I pressed my lips together. "And what would that be?"
His smirk only widened.
"Now you're stuck with me being your best mate."
