Chapter 1
I was born New York.
My mother had told me that my father died a week before I was born, but she always refused to tell me. I always wondered what he looked like, but whenever I asked, I received a back-hand to the face.
My mother and I were homeless after my dad died. She was in college, and she majored in education, but his death must have shaken her hard, because she dropped out the next day after his death.
When we went to New York, my mom had to provide us, so she got into crime. She was into prostitution and was also a thief, since she was studying to become a teacher, she taught us material up until second grade level to me.
When I was four, my mom had my sister. My sister being born,my mother said, was one of the happiest days of my life, and I enjoyed our stay at the hospital, as short as it was.
I don't know who my sisters father is, and I have no urge to. He has no place in our, or rather their lives, so he is irrelevant.
I guess I should start the night it all happened.
I was six.
Me and mother were sleeping under a bridge in the downtown district, and my sister was playing with a soda can that she had found.
She walked over to me and woke me up by ripping my jacket off of my body.
"Mickey! Mickey!" she shouted.
"What is it, Nina?"I awoke.
"My toy fell in the water. Go get it!" she urged.
"What's the magic word?"
"Peas!" She couldn't exactly get the word right, because every time I told her to say 'please', she said 'peas'.
I walked over onto the docks and searched for the can.
In the reflection I saw my sister standing over my shoulder, myself reaching for the can, and... something moved. Not in the water, but in the reflection. I saw a dark figure inching toward my sister, so I turned around to see that three more figures had shown up, but I didn't know where they had come from.
One was creeping lowly towards towards my mother whilst the other two we creeping towards my sister and I.
I turned around to see a man, or woman, I couldn't tell, in black armor with a helmet with a visor slit that went from temple to temple, and something on the corners of his jaws that looked like black, rectangular erasers.
"Get away from her!" I yelled. I ran past the figure in front of me and ran towards my mother. I was about to lunge at one of the figures, but I was yanked by my neck collar backwards.
I landed face first onto the cement and rose on my knee to get a kick to the chest into the river.
I was enraged that anyone dare mess with my family. How dare they? Why?
I swam to the surface, I saw them... checking their necks?
They looked as if they were inspecting their napes, for whatever reason.
I was hoisted up by my throat by one of the figures who pulled me out of the water and turned me around.
I tried squirming and fighting, gripping his black armored wrist, but to no avail.
"This is the one." he said through the armor.
"Get off of me!" I slipped out of my shirt he was holding me from, and ran towards my mother who was struggling also. I remember running and then feeling a prick on my neck.
My vision became blurry and then I fell onto the concrete.
One of the figures hoisted me up and put me over his shoulder, and I couldn't resist or do anything. My body went numb, and I felt nauseous.
Since I was much smaller than I am now, the effects were worse.
I wanted to throw up, but I couldn't. I didn't have the energy. My mother was screaming and my sister was frozen with fear. She kept trying to run after me, but she was still on her current high, even though she had just woken up.
I lost consciousness.
