This hollowed battleground is covered with the bodies of dead men. Boys, actually. Most have never even felt the warmth of a woman. They drown in the mud that is Passchendaele. We are allowed little time to mourn the loss of these men. Officers, brothers, and friends. We pray every night that no more may die. But the will of man on Earth supercedes the will of God in heaven I suppose. Well, at least in this type of conflict. My name is Jan Schaden. I am 19 years old, and I'm about to turn 20. Dragged into the deadliest conflict in human history.
I am a German soldier in the 1st Battalion, 2nd Regiment, Judel Company. I am a private in this Company. We have been in these trenches for weeks. At least until a British has attack forces us to move. Damn the British and their gas. Their are rumors among the soldiers that our own scientists have developed our own poison gas, and are waiting for a chance to test it.
The British have been giving us hell. Each time we go over the top, fewer men come back, if any come back. The British are like machines. Machines designed to kill.
