Present day

The screams. The fire. Then nothing. Just ash blowing through the wind.

I shoot up from bed with the memories still running through my head. Sweat dripping down my forehead. My body shaking with panic. And my heart going a million miles per second.

It was only a minute later that my alarm goes off. Bringing my shock to an extreme level. My cat, Salem crawls up from the foot of my bed to crawling on top of me.

"Salem, you crazy cat." Salem didn't like others; only me. I guess that was our bond. The name ties me back to my younger days, where everything was easier. At least now I don't have to wear that ridiculous outfit.

Salem lets out a little meow before clawing my chest. I rub her tummy, making her purr.

"Thank you Salem. Happy Birthday to me." Three hundred and twenty seven years old; and not a day over twenty seven.

The day my mother died was the day my curse and blessing began.

"The Night line will live until the end of time."

Aunt Ruby and I stopped aging. Immortal life for the Night family. I didn't know if I could die, but I certainly couldn't die from old age. After centuries of watching loved ones die, I would sometimes wish for death.

Yet this is my blessing in disguise. My curse to live on with this never ending power to destroy. The demons begging to create chaos.

I whip the blankets off my body. I swing my legs over the mattress; my feet touching the cold floor. Salem follows my movements to my kitchen. She jumps on top of the counter while I pour myself a cup of coffee.

"What do you want to do today Salem?" She tilts her head to the side and let's out a meow.

"Staying home it is." I take my mug of coffee to my window sill. There I look out to the city of New York.

My apartment was small and cozy. A small kitchen which was apart of the living room. A bedroom and bathroom connecting with a tiny closet. My kitchen counter littered with witch materials. Books in my shelf about witch history, the craft of witches and so much more.

A tingle in my fingers goes straight into the mug of cold coffee. The temperature rising in a matter of seconds. As if on cue, my phone rings. I flick my hand, making my phone fly into my hand.

"Hello?"

"Katarina! Happy Birthday."

"Thank you Aunt Ruby."

"I remember the day you were born like it was yesterday. It was quite terrifying to be honest. During the birth, all the windows broke and the fire went out..."

"Ruby, I don't want to know of my childbirth."

"Sorry honey. I just wanted to say how proud your mother would be of you."

"Thanks Ruby. I have to go."

"Alright. Be careful tonight, it's a full moon."

Would my mother be proud of me? I tried my very best to be 'innocent' for her through the years. But the world has cruel ways of getting in the way.

And today, I'm a bartender for a popular club. For that's all I can do. I've been to college more times then I can count. I've done everything at lease twice in my lifetime. All except falling in love.

Such a beautiful thing was not meant for me. A child of the night does not love. I wanted it badly, but how could you want something that isn't real?

My father left my mother after a life of happiness. I've been taught not to love for I would live longer then them. Love is a joke for humans.

I finish my cup of coffee, then send it to the sink. I snap my fingers and my spell book lands in my lap.

White magic, dark magic, healing magic, common spells, house-hold spells. All written down in these pages. You have to be careful with what you do, for everything comes with a price.

I stay away from the dark magic. Afraid I might hit a nerve in my damaged mind.

"Fiat mihi vires tacere. Diligenter non ad solvendum potestate." My energy drains; letting me fill normal for once. That should protect others tonight.

For the rest of the day, I read book after book. I've already read them multiple times, but I had nothing better to do. Salem was a great distraction for the day. Rolling around and being cute.

Wasn't long before it was time for me to get ready for work. I change out of my sweats to black jeans. My sweater to a red tank top with a leather jacket.

"Bye Salem. Be good." I grab my bag with my keys and phone. I call for an Uber and not long after I arrive at my work.

Saints and Sinners

The most popular bar and club in New York City. Full of high end business men with money falling out of their pockets. It was dark red with black all over. A long bar on the first and second floor.

The manager's name is Daniel. No one knows who the boss is. Nobody has seen him; all we know is that he is very rich and very handsome.

When I enter, the DJ was setting up. The waiters were cleaning glasses and the bartenders were getting organized.

"Happy Birthday Kat." Sam, another bartender says

"Thanks Sammy." I walk on till I'm met with a familiar blonde. Her tattoos were a dead give away, followed by the smoke surrounding her.

Zara Jackson; my best friend on this planet. She was truly a person that didn't give a flying fuck about anything. She smoked, she drank and she used substances.

We were two broken souls against the world.

"Zara, seeing you is a surprise. I thought you weren't working tonight."

"Like hell I would miss my besties birthday."

"So kind." I toss my bag under the bar.

"Let's get this show on the rode." Why couldn't I just stay in bed?

The demons can't get me there.
