Chapter 2

I had finally unpacked everything from my old room into my room. I ended up getting the room with the window that peers out in front of the main door entrance. Kamari had already started his day back at school at least 3 days ago. He's a senior so of course everything was going to be a breeze for him. I felt uneasy about it so I begged my mom to let me start next week.
Unfortunately, next week arrived rather suddenly and I am being forced to attend school tomorrow. Northeast High School. I wasn't looking forward to it at all. I wasn't ready for all the work and extra attention. I began to feel anxious. I didn't want to get lost in the hallways and embarrass myself.
But I guess I'm exaggerating. Philadelphia shouldn't be this bad. I shrugged the thoughts off and clicked off the lamp. Tomorrow was going to be a positive and educational day and I was going to make sure of that.

-

I woke up to the touch of warm hands cupping my face.
"Good morning babygirl," I heard a soft voice whisper. I fluttered open my eyes, the sunlight flooding my eyesight through the large window. I peered into the brightness. A face outlined itself through the light.
My fathers face.
I jumped, startled. Immediately the brightness disappeared. Just a dream I thought to myself, wiping the sweat from my forehead with my sleeve.
I slipped on my house shoes and walked across the room to the bathroom. I rinsed my face with water then began to wash it with my facial cleanser soap. I patted my face dry and brushed my teeth. After a short shower and combing out my curly mane of hair, I headed to the closet on the other side of the room.
I decided to wear something casual. Not to outgoing but a friendly look. I ended up wearing a white wife beater with a light bomber jacket and some jeans. For shoes, I wore my air jordan 11 retros.
"Mani! Mani! Mani!" I grabbed my worn out book bag and headed down stairs. My mother stood at the foot of the steps clutching her purse in her hands.
"You ready baby?" She asked. "I'm sorry, I meant to make you breakfast but I woke up late myself. I'm sure they serve it at the school." I smiled and grabbed an apple off of the island in the kitchen.
"It's fine mom, I don't eat much anyways. This should be enough just until lunch." She nodded her head okay and we both headed to the door.
The sky was sunny and the sudden heat made me want to take my jacket off. I knew it would be cold in the school though, it always is. Across the street a boy who looked about my age came out of his house.
"Alright ma I'll see you later!" He semi yelled back into the door before closing it shut. He was cute. Brown skinned, medium length dreads which had purple dye on a few of them here and there. He clutched a worn out book bag just like mine. I clutched the straps of my book bag tight as I watched him descend down the street towards I'm  guessing the bus stop.
I got into the passenger seat of the truck. My mom put the car in reverse, and we moved out of the driveway and on to Northeast High School.
