"Wake up, Wyveria, wake up!" Someone started shaking me.

"Ugh..." I opened my eyes and rubbed the sleep out of them. My arms were heavy one of them ached like a needle had been stuck into it. I blinked a few times and almost gasped at the person's face directly in front of me.

I was on a bed in the corner of a dark room. The only source of light was a blue computer screen. It only barely lit the person's face and shined off of his greasy hair.

How the hell did I get here?

"Oh, right, the light," the person laughed at his own rhyme.

Ah, who am I kidding? I knew exactly who it was the moment he opened his mouth.

The lights flicked on, and I shaded my eyes. Archie fished something out of his pocket. I watched as he stood, papers in one hand, and pulled a rolling chair away from the computer.

"Sorry, I can only crouch like that for so long," he said and settled into the chair. "It just kills my knees."

"Anyway," he continued, "how have you been? It's been a long time since we talked."

"There's a reason for that, ding-dong," I said. "Mom and I think you're weird, and she doesn't want me to associate with you."

"Her words?"

"Yea."

"Look, I don't know why she has that impression of me. I haven't done anything. Unless," his face darkened. "You told her about my little bug experiment, have you?"

"Who wouldn't?" I asked. "What kind of weirdo puts magic into bugs just to see what would happen?"

"Would you rather I put it into other humans? You know, actually make it illegal?" Archie's tone turned sarcastic. "Besides, it was just a little magic, and they were just bugs. What does it matter?"

"Oh, speaking of which, here," he tossed the papers at me.

What's this?" I looked at them. On the front of the first page, in big bold letters, was my name. Spelled wrong to boot. Below my name in smaller print were the words, "Magic Identification and Removal Procedure". I looked at Archie in confusion.

"You were holding those papers and stumbling down the street," he said and shrugged. "It was actually kind of funny the way you almost walked into oncoming traffic, until I realized it was you.

"Anyway,s I've been reading that in between games, and none of it sounds good." He leaned forward in his chair, humor gone from his face. "Tell me, do you feel like something is missing?"

"I... I don't... " I stammered. Panic started to rise. I hated to admit it, but something in my gut told me he was right. Something felt missing. Oh gods, this had to be a mistake.

"This can't be right," I said. I tried to summon something, anything, to my hand. Fire, water, even dirt would have been better than nothing. But I couldn't even feel the magic flowing toward my hand, and nothing appeared. Hot tears started to form behind my eyes. "This can't be right!

"Wyv, I don't want to freak you out, but I think we may have a problem," Archie said. "Whoever did this, if you can even remember them, might have targeted you intentionally."

"Why? They can't have gotten any kind of permission, even from... Oh no, what time is it?"

I looked at a clock on the wall. 2:47 AM. How long was I out?

"I have to go," I tried to get up, but an unseen force pushed me back down.

"Wyv, it's way too dangerous. Your mom can wait until the morning."

"It is morning! She's probably worried sick and still up, waiting for me to get home from school!"

I hoped he would understand, despite his own missing parents. It seemed like he did, because he sighed and said he would grab his shoes.

Afterwards, we were off towards my home.
