Prologue

Another lonely, rainy night. You sat at your desk near your window with some music playing lowly in the background, your chin on your hand. You had been working nonstop for hours, caffeine the only way you could've managed it and hungry. You were studying and taking notes like a madman, determined to finish up those stupid high school classes so you could graduate already.

Your parents were never around, you lived alone and took online classes. They made sure you had money for necessities, but otherwise it was like they never existed. You hated your parents. They never called, never visited or anything. You were unplanned and as such, they thought of you as a burden, you were sure of it.

Sighing, you got up and headed into the kitchen to make a late dinner. Low and behold, the cabinets were all empty except for one box of mac and cheese. You'd have to go to the store and pick up some groceries after eating. You picked out a pot, filled it with hot water and put it on the stove to boil, standing nearby on your phone.

Your jacket kept the air too cool for your liking off of your skin as you made your way through a shortcut in some alleyways. Sure, it wasn't too safe, but it was faster and you had pepper spray. Nothing bad ever happened, though you were certain that you've seen at least three drug deals. Suddenly, you heard a clang near one of the fire escapes you passed. You turned around quickly, hand on your pepper spray, ready to defend yourself. Nothing was there, though you could've sworn you saw some kind of dark green smoke-like substance in the air. It quickly disappeared. There was a hacking cough that sounded painful. After some time standing there, you turned around and continued making your way to the grocery store. 'Why was that smoke green?' You thought.

A loud, harsh scream of a male stopped you dead in your tracks. You heard another cough and turned back around to see a man, standing on another fire escape with his body leaning to one side. His face and upper body was covered in circular pockets, and as he breathed that green smoke came out of his airway. Before you could scream, you noticed the tongue hanging out of his mouth- a several foot long muscle that soon came flying at you too quickly to dodge. It got longer and wrapped itself around your body, dragging you towards the man in the process. You let out a shriek of complete fear and struggled to free yourself. "Help!" You cried, frantically trying to get your hand to your pepper spray but to no avail.

Before your feet left the ground, you heard a pistol shoot multiple times until the man let out an exploding cough. The tongue went completely limp and you would have fallen to the ground if not for someone behind you catching you and immediately removing the remains of the tongue. You took in a much needed deep breath and looked at the person who saved you.

It was an older man, looking to be in early sixties or late fifties. He wore a green army beret, a green jacket with his last name printed on it, Overbeck, above U.S. Army Special Forces. He must be a veteran. A cigarette was in his mouth and the smell was comforting, in a way. He helped you back to your feet and spoke. "What are ya doin' out here without a gun, kid?" He asked. His voice was a little gruff, yet gentle. That's when you realized, 'Damn, he's...hot.' Before it became awkward, you replied, "I have pepper spray, but what's going on? I've been in my apartment studying and doing homework for the past two weeks," he took a drag from his cigarette before answering. "Two weeks ago, somethin' called the Green Flu became an epidemic n' started infecting the entire country. By now, you're either dead, infected or immune, since it's airborne. If you don't believe me, go look at the street." Though you did believe him considering what just happened to you, you took a steps towards the street and stood before utter chaos. Cars flipped and on fire, dead bodies everywhere, fires in buildings and sirens wailing in the distance. Your jaw dropped in shock. He stepped towards you and put a hand on your shoulder. "CEDA couldn't contain it. Said it mutated too fast to find a cure." He told you. You turned back to him. "Are the infected all like that?" You asked, pointing back to the one that attacked you. He shook his head. "Most of 'em look almost normal, except they run at you and try to kill ya. I haven't seen any other kinds yet, besides that one just now." He answered, looking back at you. "Name's William, but you can call me Bill," he said. You smiled. "I'm Y/N. It's nice to meet you, Bill, even though there's an epidemic." You replied. You both gave a short laugh, and in that moment, you felt happier than you had in a long time.
