I woke to someone gently shaking my arm. My eyes weakly fluttered open, and I found myself staring straight into those two big, round, icy blue eyes. I smiled warmly at 10K, only to receive a small half-smile in return. Something was up.
I watched him carefully as he climbed over me, before opening the moontop and climbing out onto the roof again. I tilted my head to the side a little, not entirely sure if asking was the best thing to do.
I yawned and stretched before standing up and following him through the moontop. Once on the roof, I stayed quiet for a bit, allowing him to open up to me first if he needed to ... but I should've expected him to stay quiet, after all, we barely knew each other. Why would you tell a stranger about your issues?
"Is something wrong ...?" I asked, my tone soft.
10K shrugged, not looking at me, but gazing around at the beautiful green woods surrounding us. "Not really, I just get bored easy."
"Where are the others?" I asked, looking around for the rest of group but failing to see anyone.
"Looking for Murphy," 10K stated, almost in an annoyed manner. "He's a difficult person. He doesn't want to be part of this mission, and yet every time his life gets threatened, his excuse is always; 'if you kill me, you'll kill the rest of the world too, because I have the cure inside me'. He's so ... never mind. It's fine."
I paused for a moment and my gaze glued to him. "I'm sorry ...? What's this about Murphy having a cure inside him? Are you serious?"
10K nodded and finally gazed over at me, making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. "Yeah, about a year or so ago, Murphy's veins were injected with an antidote for the zombie virus, we know it'll work because he has about eight bites on his chest and torso and he's still alive ... sort of. Our mission is to take him to a lab in California, but we can't do that if he's going to keep running off."
Just as 10K finished his sentence, I thought I saw Murphy dash through the woods, a few yards away from the car. I gasped and pointing in the direction I'd seen him, and 10K jumped to grab his sniper rifle, unsure as to what had suddenly caught my attention.
"I saw him! Murphy! He ran that way!" I said a bit too loudly. "He went that way!"
10K peered through the trees and searched for Murphy. He didn't see anything. 10K stood up and jumped off the roof of the car. "Wait here, I'm going to look for him."
"No, don't. What if they come back and you're not here when they're ready to leave?" I said anxiously, grabbing onto his shoulder and tugging at his shirt.
10K smiled at me. "If I don't find anything in five minutes, I'll come back. Don't worry."
"Are you sure ...?" I eyed him carefully. "Don't you dare lie to me, 10K."
10K chuckled a bit. "I'm sure, don't worry about me. I'll be back in five minutes, with or without our little friend."
I don't know why, I just didn't feel right about having him go into the woods alone. I had a strong feeling that something was going to happen, something was going to go wrong ... but I didn't know if it was just my acute paranoia, or if my gutt was trying to tell me something.
Either way, I stayed as quiet as possible to make sure I would hear him if he happened to call out for any reason. I readied my shotgun, and promised myself I'd be there for him when he needed me.
Suddenly, after a few minutes, I heard 10K call out in an almost desperate manner. "Murphy! No!"
I peered out at the woods, my eyes darted around as I desperately tried to find 10K, or anyone in that case. After a minute or so more had passed, silence had taken over, and the feeling that something was wrong had gotten stronger. I knew it wasn't paranoia, it was an instinct. Something was horribly wrong, and I had to do something.
