Hi I’m Sarah and it is 18th of June 2006, I live in North America in a town called Oklahoma. I live out of town on Collins Street. I invited my friend Kate over to have a sleepover. Mum asked us what we wanted for lunch and tea, we both said chicken burgers and chips. So my mum, dad and my sister both went in town to the shops to get food.

Kate let the dog Bella outside to get some fresh air. Then Kate and i went upstairs to my bedroom, we were watching a show on TV about tornados. The show was telling us how tornados form; the TV presenter was telling us that tornados usually form in a giant rotating thunderstorm called a supercell. Supercells form when cold air meets warm air. The result is a great instability caused by the rising warm air.  A squall line, or narrow clouds forms, giving life to the tornadoes. Lightning flashes, and heavy rains and hail begin to fall. Soon after, the easiest recognizable part of the tornado, the funnel, seems to descend from the base of the cloud. The pressure within the cloud drops due to the increasing wind speeds. As the pressure drops, it causes moisture in the air to condense. This action continues down the spiral, giving the impression that the funnel is descending from the cloud base. In addition to the visible funnel, there is also a hissing sound, which turns into a loud roar when the tornado touches the earth. He also told us that a tornado has different types of energy such as sound heat, light and kinetic. He also said what were some signs of a tornado coming, such as really strong winds, thunderstorms, rain and hail. It would also get really dark, and the power will go out.

After listening to the TV show, I turned off the TV and turned the radio on so that Kate and I could just hear it. We sat on my bed and we talked about tornados and what we would do if one was to happen right now.

I went over to my curtains to shut them because it was getting really dark, but it was only 12pm. We had no idea what was happening, then we could hear heavy rain, hail, the power went out and the wind was getting really strong. Kate looked outside to see what was happening, she screamed out, “OH MY GOD THERE’S A TORNADO COMING!!” I said “shut-up so we can hear the radio.” We listened really carefully. The man said, “Anyone in the lower south part of Oklahoma there is a F3 tornado coming your way.”

We ran down stairs, Kate looked out the window and she asked, “Do you have an underground room outside?” I said, “Yes we do but do we have time to get there?” Kate said “if we run very fast.” So we went outside and stood at the door. I said we are not going to make it so we ran back inside and stayed down stairs. But then Kate had to really go to the toilet and the only one that was working was upstairs. She said, “I can’t wait any longer I have to go.” So she went upstairs and the tornado was coming and I could hear the radio down stairs. It was saying “the tornado in Oklahoma is now up to a F5.”

I was watching the tornado while waiting for Kate. I could see the tornado was becoming very big; it was picking up everything in its way. Then out of nowhere it split into two so we had twins, and I was so scared. I called out “Kate” but there was no answer. I was even more scared, I didn’t know what to, I stayed downstairs near the window sitting on the floor holding my teddy bear, but I couldn’t see the two tornados. Then I looked up to see that the roof of the house had been taking off and the tornados were circling the house. The walls were falling and everything in the house was flying everywhere. I got up and started to move over to get away from the bricks of the house to find a bit of carpet left.

I shut my eyes so I couldn’t see anything (but that was a bad idea). I ended up in the middle of our paddock. Next to me was a dead cow. There was lot of our belongings everywhere; I could see some of my things all over the paddock. I started crying, I yelled out “Kate” but there was no answer.

I didn’t know what had just happened. I was shivering and crying, I looked at my house. It was destroyed and things were everywhere. My dog Bella was lying on the ground. I didn’t know if she was dead or alive. I could see the tornado was gone. I got up from the ground and I went over to my dog Bella but she was dead. I went to find Kate I was yelling out “Kate” but there was still no answer. I went over to the remains of our house and I could see something but I didn’t know what it was. I took a closer look, then I saw a body. It was covered in blood and there was no heartbeat. It was Kate, she was dead. Her head was cut and some bricks had fallen on top of her and had cut her belly. I sat there looking at Kate and I told her “how much I loved her and I didn’t want her to die but I couldn’t change this.”

An hour later my mum, dad and sister came home. They all came up to me and gave me the biggest hug and I told that Kate died and they all said “we are very sorry.” Kate’s mum came and we told her the Kate died. She started crying I gave her a massive hug and said I am very sorry. I asked mum if she saw the tornado, she said “yes but the tornado went towards the northern part of South Dakota. We didn’t get hit; we just got strong winds and heavy rain”.

A month later we had a funeral for Kate and cleaned up our house and rebuilt. We are all going well and I never want to face a tornado alone or with my family. I don’t want to see any of my family members or any of my friends die.

A/N yea I sort of wrote this last year in year 8. it was for a science project and it really does suck like badly. but I got an A and bet all the smart people and got the highest mark in the class, I don't know how though. Really hoped you enjoyed my sucky skills.
