Have you ever felt like your day was going great? Like, it was so great that you couldn't help but feel like you were on top of the world? That was exactly how it felt throughout the whole day. Everything was perfect or somewhat perfect, except for the insane thunderstorm that was knocking off a very fine day.

As a nurse practitioner at the most hectic hospital in downtown Cleveland, it was crazy that it wasn't that much commotion on a Friday evening. I was always ready for something or someone to bring emergencies into the facility.

"Slow day, huh Harper," my coworker said as he moseyed last me. I nodded and smiled.

I wasn't from Cleveland, Ohio. I had only been living in the city for almost a year, and I had started to become fond of the new sights around. I was a southern gal from Nashville, Tennessee. I loved Nashville with all my heart, but moving to Cleveland was something I ultimately needed to do. I was offered a job at the most profound health institute in the country, and jumped at it like it was the only job offer I had.

My mother was my all, so when I got the job in Cleveland, I had to take her with me. After my dad had died three years ago, my mother was completely lost without him. I couldn't blame her though. She and my dad had been married for over 27 years. You would get use to seeing the love of your life's face everyday for almost three decades straight. Imagine just suddenly having to bury your love at the young age of 46. My dad's death was the worst thing to ever happen to my mom and I.

I was in nursing school and keeping my mother afloat for these last years. She barely wanted to go out, and I was convinced that she was so heartbroken that she didn't even want to live the rest of her life. I kind of felt a little discouraged by the fact that I couldn't even brighten my mother's day some days, but it was healing process that she hadn't overcame yet. And something I hadn't even thought of doing...

"Looks like we have to help in the ER," Trina, a doctor at the facility, told me as she quickly rushed past me. I quickly gathered my things and jogged out of my station. I turned the corner to catch up with Trina before she could type in the code to enter the ER.

Trina had taken me under her wings after a few months at the hospital. She was very impressed by me after I had to help her with one of her patients while the nurse that was with her was on vacation. She was even more astounded when she found out that I was a Vanderbilt University alumni like her.

"What happened? What's going on," I asked frantically. This was the first emergency we had all day. It wasn't my first time having to transfer to the Emergency Room though. It was something that made my adrenaline rush. I have witnessed some crazy things in that side of the hospital, including death, but it wasn't something that I couldn't handle.

"A man in his car collided with a middle-aged woman in her SUV while on the interstate not too far from here," she told me as we began to jog down the hallways. "Apparently the SUV flipped numerous times before hitting the rails on the road."

I gasped with my eyes as wide as they could be. "Oh my." I couldn't even finish my sentence. This was probably going to be the patient in the worst condition I'd have to help so far.

Trina and I finally reached the entrance of the ER. By that time, the ambulance was hurriedly rolling in the woman on the gurney. A man had followed close behind them. He looked like he was hurt as well. His white t-shirt had blood stains all over it as well as ripped holes. His legs were severely scratched. You could see the scratches even though he had many tattoos covering his legs. His face wasn't as bad. He had a few cuts over his forehead and nose with a busted lip.

"Mr. Beckham, Mr. Beckham," the police officers that had entered shortly afterwards had said, "You can't go back there. The doctors need to take her now."

Her

I was so distracted by him that I didn't even examine the woman that needed the most attention at the moment. When I tried to look, Trina stood in front of me as if she were shielding my eyes from the woman. "What's wrong," I questioned.

"Harper-," she replied before I realized why she was being a blockade to my sight.

"Mom..."
