CHAPTER ONE:
UNAWARE DANGER.

──────── ⋆ ✰ ⋆ ────────

Cora was back home for break. With a week off of school, she decided to return home to help her mom with her younger brothers. It was something she found herself doing almost every break. It was only on rare occasions where she wouldn't go home. And as much as sometimes she just wanted time for herself to relax, she knew her mother needed her help. She knew how hard it was for a single woman to raise four boys.

Cora has always been family oriented. Ever since her Dad died, she took on the role of sacrificing everything for her family. Any events that happened at school, she would have to miss to work an extra shift, or to watch her brothers while her mom worked. Any money she made, she shared with her mom to cover the bills. And any money she saved for something she wanted, she would use to buy her brothers new toys or books. And although she was able to go to college, it was to major in a profession that could make good money to help support her family, not really something she wanted.

But she never complained — at least not out loud. Cora was a master at hiding what she felt. On the outside she could be smiling sweetly and laughing loudly, while on the inside she could be screaming. No one ever truly knew what she felt. Except somehow, her best friend Sam could always break it out of her.

She never really knew why he was the one that could. Cora just felt so comfortable and at ease with him. She and Sam were the best of friends ever since the beginning of high school. Even when he left, they had promised to keep in touch. And then they found each other at the same college. Except, Sam had suddenly dropped out. But even then, they would talk on the phone whenever they could. Their bond was just unbreakable. Even now on her break she found herself on the phone with him while she walked around the neighborhood.

"Hey Sam. It's been a while since we've last talked. How are you?" she asked as she spoke into her phone.

"Oh I've been good. Sorry I know it's been a long time. I just get super busy sometimes. How's school?"

"Well it's school. It's hard and stressful. But I'm managing," she sighed.

"Yeah that's one thing I don't miss about college. The work sucked."

Cora smiled at the fact that Sam was enjoying his life. She didn't know much about what he was doing nowadays. He kept that to himself mostly. All she knew was that he was taking time off.

Cora was about to reply when something else caught her attention. The flashing lights of police cars and the crowd of people surrounding an alley caused her curiosity to spread. She made her way closer, pushing through the crowd to the front. Her eyes wandered the crime scene, finding the police covering up a lifeless body. "Oh my god," she said into the phone.
