Another twang of her bow was followed by a throaty giggle. Lyina was once again in her element which meant she didn't have to think about the tug of war that had been taking place in her mind of late. Instead she simply could immerse herself in the joy of glorious combat.
The fallen before her were no real challenge. Dregs, vandals and captains all fell easily to her weapons as she darted in and out of view. It was almost too soon that she realized there were no enemies left in the area. Darting quickly back to the center of the battlefield, she realized her temporary allies were being overrun by Taken.
These foes were more dangerous and it was clear the lack of experience with her new team was causing some issues. She was so used to a fireteam that worked in unison even without having to say a word. These others lacked any of that synergy.
The Traveler's light filled the hunter as she leapt high into the air. A void arrow streaked from her bow of light, trapping the enemies surrounding the vault. A toss of her grenade and a few well placed bow shots saved her struggling teammates quickly.
Soon enough the primevil appeared surrounded by envoys, witches who shielded their leader. But the hunter had saved her fusion rifle ammo for them and they too dropped with ease. She had the rhythm of this great game down and knew the best ways to approach it. Her movement was fluid as she darted just under the descending drill towards the final protective witch.
"Guardian incoming," screeched a panicked voice in her comms. They had an invader present, a nuisance who threatened her well-earned victory. The human watched as the titan on her team was dropped by an unseen shot. Trees blocked her view as she narrowed down the target's location.
Finally Lyina spotted her enemy guardian and swiftly hit it with an arrow. But that wasn't enough to down the invader as it shot a rocket speeding towards the hunter in the open. Quickly she darted forward, dodge rolling out of the way behind a rock at the last second. Too fast for most to follow she aimed, drew and loosed her arrow. It struck true and the guardian was downed.
She barely heard the jubilant cheers of her team as she pressed forward. She unleased her full arsenal upon the large taken. It was dangerous but nothing compared to what she stared down since her original resurrection. With the help of her squad they were able to down the large enemy before their opponents and win the match.
Lyina removed her helmet once they were back from the field. "Good job." "You were amazing." "We will have to do it again sometime." She was greeted by things she had heard before and simply nodded in return. Rarely had she fought with the same guardians in Gambit but there was no need to tell these others that.
With a bit of downtime her thoughts came flooding back. They had been asked to undertake a secret mission from the leaders of the vanguard. Zavala and Ikora were trusting them to put aside their differences for the good of humanity once more. Yet her issues with Airon were not easily put to bed. He was stubborn and bullheaded, and didn't trust that she knew what was best.
Lyina wasn't sure what had come between her and Nox, other than being caught in the middle. The exo was doing his best to please both of them yet failing on each front. She knew it wasn't his fault but that hadn't made her feel any better.
There was a connection between them still but it was more strained than ever before. They had been a close-knit family and now were a distant one. Maybe she could convince them to join in on Gambit so the battles could remind them of what once was.
"Heya kid, got time to chat," interrupted the Drifter's unmistakable voice. She almost jumped out of her skin as he seemingly appeared out of nowhere.
"Sure thing," she tried to hide her excitement at the thought. The man had seen things she could only imagine and she was desperate to pick his brain. Not that she'd let him know that though.
They walked down the halls until she noticed there was no one else around. She hoped he wasn't getting the wrong impression but "Don't worry, it's all business." How had he known? "I seen your skills out there, very impressive. And I hear word you took down some mighty enemies too."
Her fireteam's tales were well known within the ranks of the guardians but Lyina still nearly blushed. "Thanks, the extra Gambit practice has definitely been helping."
"Don't be modest, hunter. I bet you could even take the man with the golden gun himself." The words trailed but he continued before she could form a response. "But I need folks to watch my back, capable fighters in a pinch. There's a storm brewing and we all gotta pick a side before it comes. Whatdya say?"
She was flattered for certain, but these words were so similar to those spoken by the vanguard about the Taken threat. Everyone could feel the imminent threat yet known could tell from where it would strike. He tapped his boot impatiently as she hesitated.
"Of course I have your back," the nightstalker finally replied. It was an easy decision once she stopped overthinking. What were the chances it would come to anything at all? And the Drifter was someone who would definitely be a useful friend should the worst ever come to pass.
"Just what I wanted to hear. See ya around, Dredgen." Without waiting he turned back towards his room in the tower. That conversation had not gone as she had expected at all. Dredgen? As in those lightbearers who pushed too close to the darkness? The idea was both terrifying yet somewhat exciting at the same time.
Normally this was something she would rush off to tell Airon and Nox. But as things stood it didn't much matter if she did or not. She was free to do as she pleased and doubted they would much care for her choice in allies. Instead she made her way towards the local ramen shop to refuel before putting her title back to use against the enemies of humanity.
